  1. shoelessinbearvalley says:

I think it was one, singularly brave William Bochy Travis who once exclaimed, “Lester or Death!” … and then even going back further in time, someone by the name of Patrick Brucious Henry, who boldly declared, “Give me Lester, or give me death!”

While I am momentarily unable to handnote, let alone footnote, the above quotes, due to operating system and Wikipedia incompatibility issues, I do have it from several other highly reliable anonymous sources that every word spoken remains absolutely true and was once said by at least someone at one time or another.

    • annapirhana says:

After hearing the 6 or 7 years/$150-$175m for Lester, perhaps we should choose the “death” option on this go-round. Those numbers are ridiculous, but both the Cubbies and BoSox are willing to offer that to Lester.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

I actually agree with your point, so I choose death too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey, since 2015 is an odd-numbered year, maybe the Giants could afford to bide their time, giving Crick or someone else from the minors to finally make their way up. Every indication, however, appears to be that Giants ownership wants to offset the morale loss of a fan favorite (Sablo Pandoval) by making some splash news with a big name FA distraction pickup. But, unless you’re a relatively young Kershaw (or a Bumgarner) right now , a six year contract sure seems like a Zito-esque high stakes risk.

  2. shoelessinbearvalley says:

Something little discussed to date is Romo’s fate as a Giant in 2015.

Despite Sergio’s heroics in 2012, earning his right ‘by committee’ to become Bochy’s closer, he has always appeared to me to be best suited as a setup guy – whether pitching ahead of Wilson, Casilla, or possibly ‘one day’ even Strickland – if only Hunter could put it all together (and whether his morale / spirit could possibly survive Bochy having placed him in tough-to-brutal p.s. situations – asking more than he was heretofore prepared for).

So, I’m hoping the Giants find a way to hold onto Romo, but probably not realistic given their other pressing needs in LF, pitching, and 3B.

  3. dirtnrocksnomo says:

Sure, I would like to see SF land Lester but it seems more like an effort by Sabean to stick it to Boston.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

hmmm … that doesn’t sound like something that would motivate Sabean or Giants ownership. But, I suppose that’s a possibility too. Still, if the Giants to acquire Lester’s arm for something like 6 years and $130+ million dollars later, I’m really not sure who really wound up being sticked to in the end. That’s a pretty daunting amount of years and dollars.

      • dirtnrocksnomo says:

Fair point. I think that Sabean sometimes mixes to much personal with his business. Regardless, I would like to see Lester in orange and black. The money is chump change to ownership.

    • annapirhana says:

Seeing that lots Sabean’s old employer was Steinbrenner, and we know how competitive the old guy was when it came to the BoSox, this would seem likely!

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Anna, good insider knowledge which corroborates dirtnrocksnomo’s observation.

And now that you’ve posted the following update:

        “10:12 a.m.
โ€” Per rumored sources, the SF Giants have offered JON LESTER a 6 yr./$145m deal. Yikes.”

make that a double dose of Yikes. I suppose given the nature of the inflationary prone FA market, perhaps, the Giants are thinkin’ that 6 years from now the Lester deal will look like chicken feed? ๐Ÿ˜›

  4. xoot says:

Sign Lester. The Giants would have two big, bad, tough, durable lefties, with Cain and Hudson as the righties in the top 4 of the rotation. Damn. That could make up for the loss of Pablo’s bat.

Anybody see the Donaldson/Beano stuff showing up in the news reports? mid-2014, Donaldson asked Melvin to give him a couple of days off, so Melvin posted a LU card without Donaldson on it, and Beano (reportedly) ordered Melvin to put Donaldson back in. Donaldson then had it out with Beano in a loud argument overheard by many, during which Donaldson called the guy “Billy Boy.” Fast forward to last week, before the trade, when Donaldson tweeted that the a’s owners have plenty of money, they just pretend they don’t.

Couple of things: I like Donaldson a lot more than I used to. Beano is nothing but a weak imitation Charlie Finley, toothless without the unlimited reserve clause Finley used to control players. It’s no fun being hooked to a long-term a’s contract these days, but it is possible to move on. And, finally, can you imagine Sabean ordering Bochy to change his LU card? No wonder the a’s fail. Sabean and Beano became Bay Area GMs at essentially the same time (circa 1996). The Giants have been to the WS 4 times since then. And since then, the a’s haven’t won a PS game outside a division series. We Giants fans are pretty lucky.

Meanwhile, I guarantee you Beano doesn’t have the guts to trot out the old mule mascot and name him “Billy Boy.”

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Perhaps, Beane’s experience in 2002, and assuming Brad Pitt and the Moneyball director weren’t pulling our leg when Billy kept insisting that Art Howe play Scott Hatteberg at 1B (who hit .280 w/568 plate appearances) and was ultimately proven ‘right’, still governs the way BB thinks. IOW’s, maybe Beane’s become too enamored with the movie that made him look like the Albert Einstein of general managers?!

But, I agree that such a heavy-handed managerial approach to Donaldson lacked humanity towards one’s fellow man; and yet the story may go deeper than what the public knows. In any case, the trade for Donaldson now makes all the more sense – for both Donaldson and Beane.

As for whether Donaldson would have been “perfect” – as one Monday morning general manager wannabe back at SFGate put it, I doubt Sabean would have been willing to come up with the kind of trade to complement Beane’s needs.

  5. dirtnrocksnomo says:

I did see that “Billy Boy” story too and though it was just more of the same from the A’s. Let’s be fair though, xoot. The A’s still have the reigning 2014 HR Derby Champ. Oh wait…derp.

The Bochy Taking Walks book in the works per the zen link is hilarious. To me at least.

  6. annapirhana says:

I’m out of commission until the end of the day so if anybody wants to take over hot stove duties for today, feel free!

  7. shoelessinbearvalley says:

Chico has my vote to ‘temp’ for a day! (his absence at the front is missed).

  8. shoelessinbearvalley says:

On a completely non-sequitur topic, I see that SF has gotten 2.97 inches of rain over the last two days – the most since January 2008 if my source is accurate.

It’s been raining both cats and free roaming dogs (that abide at my nearest neighbor down the road from here) all night here as well. Temperatures at 7000 ft have hovered in the upper 30’s – current temp is 37 F degrees. But, at Mammoth Mountain to the south 9000-10000 ft., the storm has dumped roughly 3 feet of heavy wet base-forming snow. The snow-bums are hoping / expecting to see the better snow to hit the resorts by mid-month.

Now, back to moneyba … err, baseball. carry on.

  9. shoelessinbearvalley says:

Would I be right (or at least wishful) to believe that if Brandon Moss gets traded to the Indians that his internet troll-mate, “mosshead,” will likely follow close behind and never to be seen nor heard again on the SFGate? ๐Ÿ˜‰
