Tying loose ends, marching to the Dumb beat

Our boys have one more week to tie loose ends, send down the youngsters and head back to the Bay Area, where the Splash and Dumb beat will become one long troll fest of travel writer menace, gender confusion and a lesson in psychological disorders.  Life will commence as usual at the SFGate while we have our own little haven right here, custom fit for the passionate Giant fan and soon-to-be Giant fan thinking bloo.

Meanwhile, the team has released a new season of commercials.  Most of them try the DirectTV approach of clever commercials, only these fail miserably.  The most popular one?  Of course:

Meanwhile, Panda wants a Pence-like contract.  Things happen to your ego when you diet.  Just make sure to keep it up, Panda, and who knows?  Otherwise, we should concentrate on beisbol and Adrianza’s ERA, amirite?

As for the Pablo contract renewal question, my 2 cents,

‘Most’ players earn their contracts, based on what they did – not what they are “going to do” (as Chico aptly posted on the Splash). Sandoval’s contract, hence, poses contradicting thoughts / considerations.

By coming to camp in the best shape since 2009, Pablo is making his case.

In 2013, Pablo also made an equally compelling case that he observably placed himself and his own personal health habits / challenges ahead of management and the team. His DL stints made the case.

One thing witnessed about all of the off-season contracts is that it’s a players’ market – many received mammoth contracts based on as much of a player’s ‘blue sky’ potential as much as they were being rewarded for their past year(s) accomplishments.

Pence made his contract renewal case (after scuffling in the second half of 2012), by playing everyday through 2014. Many fans criticized Hunter’s contract for being ‘over the top’, but even without hindsight, Pence’s $90M, 5 yr. contract proved modest / reasonable with the market. One only need review Cano’s $240 million, 10 year contract to appreciate what a bargain Pence now appears to be.

Long term contracts inherently come with the risk of the ‘albatross’ thing to ownership. Aaron Rowand’s five year contract wound up being a bit of an albatross for the Giants – hell, they paid him not to play in his fifth year.

The albatross poses risk to every player contract, even one as ‘short’ as Scutaro’s more modest 3 year deal.

As for the wheeling and dealing, even a 3 year Sandoval contract entails some, but surely acceptable risk – given today’s market. But without more – current – data, for Sabean to offer Sandoval a Pence-like five year deal even before he plays a single regular 2014 season game would either suggest that Sabean has a lot of faith in Pablo’s still untapped, ‘blue sky’ potential, or maybe, given the exceedingly competitive players’ market, Sabean is just damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t offer Pablo the contract his agent wants.

By Sandoval coming to camp in the best shape since 2009, he’s made a strong case for a deal more to his liking than Sabean’s, but, I still don’t see how the Giants ignore one more compelling difference between Hunter and Pablo in 2013. Pence played everyday. Pablo not so much.

  2. unca_chuck says:

Regardless, Pablo will get a deal north of $100 mill should he choose to wait. And his wrist injuries had mothing to do with his weight. The foot? Maybe. Maybe not. It comes down to whether they want to keep him or not.

The awful outcome is him being signed by the Dodgers. How fun would it be to see him manning 3rd base in Dodger blue for the next 8 years?

It’s much like the Colin Kaepernick situation. The longer you wait, the higher the price tag gets. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to keep him.

If he wants 5/$90 mill, give it to him. It’s not like these goddamn owners (hi Charlie) are going bankrupt by signing him.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Your post alone is pretty damn convincing, Chuck! Especially, given it’s their money to spend (and not mine). I guess I’m only left wondering (because I haven’t researched this yet) if Pablo’s coming deal will have any impact on the luxury tax cap.

      • unca_chuck says:

Hah! Luxury tax be damned. I don’t think they’ll reach it (and I don’t even know what it is), but as it is now, they have to keep their known entities and hope the pitching rebounds this year. If they let these guys slip away, it’ll only get worse if they have to chase replacements in the FA market. It’s not like there’s a 3rd baseman in AAA (or AA, or even A) waiting to take over.

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Yeah, ha! ha! what luxury tax? So, Chuck, it still would seem like a good idea to have Pablo’s contract should be incentive-laden, based on games played / AB’s, etc.. I’m assuming there is no such thing as a “weight” clause, right?

    • annapirhana says:

Panda is a very very popular player with the Giants fans. Something for the front office to consider.

As to the Dorks, dork dork dork dork. Can’t stand them.

  3. shoelessinbearvalley says:

p.s. Below is my only second (and doubtless last) communication to VK. I don’t give up easy, even if it may appear to all of us here, I must love mercilessly thrashing and beating up on the poor dead horse ….

    Dear Vlae Kershner,

    “I’m sure he’ll be back.”

Yes, you have been proven correct. (but, the fact ‘he’ cannot use the now banned alias, “scottcousins,” I still consider to be a small ‘v’ victory.) When “chicoflores28” appeared two days ago, my first thought: “scottcousins” alias Flablo alias gnatsrock, alias Barry4ever. All of us who frequent another website agree ‘he’s back’. So what?

Well, a Giants fan posted yesterday on another dedicated Giants fan website, the following comment,

“Look, SFGate is a fools errand. Most of the comments you see are made by one guy with at least 50 [I’d suggest more like “100”] different usernames who runs Anonymizer software. He’s been a problem for years ….”

Which is the crux of the problem and why I write.

In doing a cursory search for available decrypting / software option(s) to force a user’s hidden IP address to be revealed – no luck. It’s a problem with no solution so it would seem.

Leaving only one viable option: More vigilant / determined Moderation.

And, yet, Vlae, I am continually surprised to see just how many SFGate / Giants Splash faithful contributors continue to have their own comments “disabled” daily for simply, even fairly questioning / pointing out the observably questionable nature of a small handful of anonymous aliases observed on the Giants Splash / Comment pages that repeatedly dog, denigrate, berate … you know, “trash talk” the Giants, from ownership to individual players.

Time and again, fellow Giants fans, including myself, have been ‘moderated’ while the easily and clearly observed troll continues to lay his mines / fire-bomb the SFGate Splash and Giants Comment pages, even if, as you thoughtfully acknowledged,

“He’s so subtle that the moderators don’t realize that it’s trolling.
Only subtle, however, if not looking for the observably repeating pattern, defining ‘trolling’.”

Why any of this might is important enough to communicate to you directly again is to uphold more professional standards at SFGate and avoid what a fellow Giants fan suggested earlier, regarding “a fool’s errand”.

The SFGate troll has made a calculated gamble, born now of considerable experience, that “we” are the fools, perhaps, because they think they can troll with impunity, because of some cloaking IP Address script / software aid.

However, with just a little more careful and determined moderating by your professional moderators, the troll can easily be exposed – even without an exposed IP address, assuming of course that banning trolls would become as much a Moderator’s aim and daily habit as disabling SFGiants fans posts on a daily basis for simply thinking / hoping to point this out while online to the invisible Moderator peering down from ‘above’.

Here’s hoping this post shall not perish in vain, Vlae.

    • Chico says:

This email is perfectly composed with the facts. Nice work, Shoeless! If nothing is done, then we know what’s up.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Thanks, Chico. I, of course, took considerable liberty to quote part of your post on last week’s edition of JD’s Revenge … but, I cloaked your IP and everything else to ensure complete anonymity. 🙂

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

oops … I noticed my Anonymizer software didn’t cloak my real first name! My cover’s been blown and I did it to myself. Typical. ‘my life in a nutshell’ …. 😉

          • Chico says:

So you invented the Grand Slam breakfast! 😉

            • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Actually, my cousin, Alfredo, rest his soul, still gets the credit for that ‘thrifty’ enterprise. He felt at the time – just prior to going out in for a little fishing … mysteriously never to return, that lending his name to the restaurant chain just made it sound a bit ‘too’ Sicilian for comfort, so he made me an offer I in truth refused, but he went ahead anyway, claiming, he named it after some thought to be obscure at the time American League baseball pitcher from the ’60’s.

On a serious note, I forgot that Denny McClain was “Suspended for Gambling and Later Served Time for Racketeering & Embezzlement” … otherwise, like Rose, he’d be in the HOF, eh?

              • unca_chuck says:

Yup. Last 30 game winner in baseball.

                • shoelessinbearvalley says:

What a shame his career now goes unnoticed, not because of the way he played, but for completely being overshadowed by personal vice. The immediate comparison that comes to mind in the music world is Richard Wagner. An apparently notorious anti-Semite son-of-a-bitch … but, there’s absolutely no denying nor lacking historical recognition for his contributions to ushering in, predicting the ‘modern’ era of 20th c. music – some 40-50 years ahead of his time. Probably not a fair or realistic comparison, because the music world never had a ‘Commissioner of Music’, breathing down its neck.

            • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Hey Chico, I still think the Grand Slam breakfast is a hard deal to refuse (it’s often the ‘ambience’ that sucks!)

  4. shoelessinbearvalley says:

edit: “He’s so subtle that the moderators don’t realize that it’s trolling.” (VK)

Only subtle, however, if not looking for the observably repeating pattern, defining ‘trolling’. (me)

  5. unca_chuck says:

That shit is subtle? Seriously, Vlae? 12 posts in a row ripping averything from the uniforms to the front office in the name of supporting the team is about as subtle as a brick to the head.

  6. annapirhana says:

Andrew Boogerly says that Scutaro is likely to start the season on DH, leaving the #2 position in question. Bochy also became snappy when asked if Vogelsong’s job was in question. Implied it was not a debate as of now.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

“Otherwise, we should concentrate on beisbol and Adrianza’s ERA, amirite?” As usual, you beisbol right.

Interesting response by the more often just-got-out-of-bed-like Bochy, who has shown tremendous (others might claim, “stubborn”) loyalty to his players. Personally, I like that quality as a fan so long if it isn’t taken too far (I thought at the time that Bruce was slow to replace Rowand with Torres out of the 1 slot back in 2010 … but it still all worked out well in the end); but more importantly, the players appreciate and probably enjoy all the more playing for a manager like Bochy.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

p.s. I’m with Bochy for now as it relates to Vogelsong. We will all know in 3 or so starts whether Ryan will remain in the regular rotation. Until then, I trust Sabean / Bochy already have contingency plans in place … just in case.

        • annapirhana says:

I rue that Carlos Beltran trade 😦

          • shoelessinbearvalley says:

A very raw deal. Zach Wheeler. would have made Ryan’s 3 month DL absence last year and this year’s ‘worrisome’ ST starts all moot. But, nothing to do but plug on … either that or troll-en-mass / trash the a’s official website in righteous indignation. 😉

  7. annapirhana says:

Er…gentlemen…your Splash girl has just royally pissed off Nicole Vogelsong. I mean ROYALLY. The Mrs. is going off on her big time.

This was the last tweet by Nicole Vogelsong:
    Nicole Vogelsong
@Gretchen415 @giantsgirldani Tell me the person you love the most in the world and let me post hate about them on multiple sites a day.

    Ms.J ‏
@sotilla @nicolevogelsong @giantsgirldani She can block me, as I have her. That is the adult thing to do.

    Nicole Vogelsong
@Gretchen415 @sotilla @giantsgirldani Truly one of the keyboard bullies, can talk trash but when confronted hide!! I love twitter!

    • Chico says:

WTF did I tell you all? I was right, once again!

      • Chico says:

btw, Lockedup is another PY handle.

      • annapirhana says:

Hahaha…I was telling a female Dodger fan friend to watch the fight, and Mrs. Vogelsong joined our conversation. She was trying to hold her tongue and not swear. I had the pleasure of sitting in front of her in San Diego, and she is quite the personality. Very unlike your typical wife that was there in that she was engaging, personable and had tons of spunk. Much to love!

        • Chico says:

          LOL! Love it!

          • annapirhana says:

Holy Cow…now I’m getting into it with her. WHEEEEEE. Bitch is CRAZY. Says she just put her tickets on Stubhub. HAHAHAHAHAHA

            • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Yeah, but all I wanna know is, can she cook? 🙂

              • annapirhana says:

Based on what I’ve seen from her tonight, do you want to be basted, broasted, broiled or just eaten raw? I have dealt with nutty people all my life, but she is really a piece of work. One of the few I can say needs to be put on meds or locked away because she is dangerous, and feels no qualms about telling the internet world that Nicole Vogelsong is a dangerous stalker that is out to kill her. Seriously.

                • shoelessinbearvalley says:

                  From today’s “Splash”

… BTW, I was attacked on Twitter last night by Mrs. Vogelsong. Does she honestly expect people to ignore her husband’s results vs. his words? “Oh, I feel great!” LOL. She better buck up, not long before the majority sound like me when talking about him.

After seeing how she is, I must say, I’ve gone from not caring about how he does to actively hoping he fails and fails spectacularly. Pass the popcorn.

                  (not well)

                • annapirhana says:

You only need to look at my Twitter feed to see the conversation I had with her, wherein she accused Nicole Vogelsong of not only stalking her, but making her feel as if her life was in danger. For this reason, she alleges to have put all her tickets on Stub Hub. I do not like the stalker claims, having had a few in my life. She is seriously mentally ill.

  8. shoelessinbearvalley says:

I just received the following email – a one-liner sentence – from VK. It reads:

“I don’t really see anything in chicoflores comments that says troll, can u point it out?”

My first thought … Christ, he must be playing me; because when I went back to review all of chicoflores28 ‘comments’, many were gone – including the one that said, “Vogelesch” (I may have misspelled that by one letter, I think – working from memory – but, this post where ‘Wayne’ uses his pseudo German language to play with Vogesong’s name has clearly been removed.)

For those who ‘know’ VK, (sandy, chico, xoot … other), does this sound consistent with who you think VK might be about. IOW’s, it looks like he scrubbed a number of chicoflores28 posts and then ‘innocently’ asks me to point out where his post suggest he’s a “troll”.

I will be obliged to respond to him tomorrow – so if you have any suggestions, advice, etc., thanks ahead of the fact, Of his posts still on the comment pages, I still believe I will be able to make a case – but it won’t be as strong as it would have been if he has done what I think he’s done – removed his most offensive posts.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Another thought I had is to, before proceeding with VK’s request, is to first ask him to define what he and / or the Viafoura guidelines define as “troll”. IOW’s, do we even know for sure they have a working definition for “troll?” Let alone that they appear to be more in the business of tactically deleting a flagged post or posts that violate some inner circle V guidelines known only to V? But, no strategy to deal with trolls.

    • xoot says:

shoeless, I’ve had a lot of interaction with VK over the years. I think he’s an asshole who favors the dumbeat and hates the splash, but I don’t think he puts much effort into the unabalanced treatment the two blogs receive. (The difference between the way H. Schulman and S. Slusser deal with the blogs is just as important to the imbalance.) He just favors the beat and neglects the splash.

I replied to that Vogelshech comment so I noticed that it (and all replies to it) got removed. Wayne the travel price-list writer is trying to fly under the radar now. He’s struggling to draft comments that don’t sound “learned.” And he’s trying to do his best to be ambiguous, so that VK’s cursory review sees no signs of trolling.

I think we should just mock the guy mercilessly until he loses control again. Unless we have something better to spend our time on. 🙂

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

“I replied to that Vogelshech comment so I noticed that it (and all replies to it) got removed.”

xoot, thanks for this! Now I know, he’s full of it, disingenuous in the way he responded to my email of this morning. I gave him my name, but he lacked the *professional* courtesy to not only not address me by name (i.e., no formal salutation), but he also abbreviate ‘you’ to ‘u’ – as if he’s in a chat hall blogging with me. And finally he didn’t end with any signature – how professional is this coming from some ‘head’ of some department / company representative?! 😉

Anyway, I really appreciate you confirming that that “Vogelshech” comment, etc. was all scrubbed off the board only after my morning post, but before VK asks me ‘where’s the troll?’ … ‘I don’t see no troll’ … ‘are you sure there are troll(s)?, or maybe you’re just imagining trolls … you need to get out more’ … lol.

        • xoot says:

VK also gets emails from Wayne, I suspect, complaining about us. Or about me,anyway. The humble phrase “gaucho pants” now seems to trigger comment “disabling.” .

  9. shoelessinbearvalley says:

MOW … I don’t Twitter … I fear my time is too limited to ‘go there’.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

My one point was to show that GeeJay has taken her twitter ‘feed’ over to the Splash … she don’t know when to call it a day.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

        (From MOW’s thread higher up)

“You only need to look at my Twitter feed to see the conversation I had with her, wherein she accused Nicole Vogelsong of not only stalking her, but making her feel as if her life was in danger. For this reason, she alleges to have put all her tickets on Stub Hub. I do not like the stalker claims, having had a few in my life. She is seriously mentally ill.”

That’s too bad. Really, when you think about it. I’m not sure if being hard on her – as some responses she must inevitably generate – might actually help or if it only drives her deeper towards some tipping point of no return. I don’t know. But life is full of shit that I / we seem powerless to stop from going down.

        • xoot says:

In my experience people who publicly proclaim themselves “wicked smart” usually aren’t, although such proclamations may suggest other things about their minds. (Check her twitter profile.)

          • shoelessinbearvalley says:

A bit like the self-proclaims “genius”. Better to permit another to lay token tributes and flowers at your feet than to adorn yourself when thinking no one’s looking. 😉

  10. unca_chuck says:

  11. annapirhana says:

Wow..not sure what to do here. She tells me that Vogelsong is a stalker, evil bitch who has her fearing for her life, then goes on SFGate to spread the same BS. We have a mutual twitter friend, a lawyer who had to pull me off her before I went ballistic on her. This morning, he sent me a message saying that he re-read the full conversation and called her a bitch. Maybe I should warn Mrs. V or something, because some serious allegations have been made and are being actively spread in public. Even recounting my own personal experience with Mrs. V as opposed to the crazy person’s reliance on “…I have heard..” failed to temper her claims. It is so very grammar school, except it comes from the mind of a grown woman who seems to want to play victim in public.

That’s true, shoeless. But Hudson has faced more LH batters than RH in his career (managers trying to break the spell, obviously), and his splits aren’t bad at all. He’s also a wily mofo.

FYI (long and probably of little interest to most here – just documenting herein, my 3rd – and god willing last – email to VK)

“I don’t really see anything in chicoflores comments that says troll, can u point it out?” (VK)

Whether one is or is not a Giants fan,

The reason you specifically may not see “anything … that says troll,” Vlae, is that the Splash pages were scrubbed last night of many – but not all of – chicoflores28’s posts. Your request as a moderator comes at a particularly challenging time, eh?

Vlae, one example – checked and corroborated by other – was a chicoflores28’s ‘comment’, posted yesterday, 3-23-14, wherein he refers to Ryan Vogelsong as “Vogelshech”. Do you seriously think a Giants fan would post anything so ‘Germanic’?

You may recall that this Germanic slur was a previous play on word, posted under a previously banned alias of now “chicoflores28”. This post – at the time – too was scrubbed, but, of course only after it was brought to your attention; and when provided a translation from German to English that it referred to a bodily human function. [edit: I couldn’t remember what the translation was, but this is the best memory could approach to recall …]

4.3 Acceptable Use Policy, states in brief that,
    (a) You agree not to post, email, or otherwise make available User Content:
    – that is … abusive, harassing, defamatory ….
    – that is false, deceptive, misleading, deceitful, misinformative, constitute “bait and switch” or impersonation of any person or entity.

False, deceptive, misleading, deceitful, mis-informative, “bait and switch,” and impersonation … including, let’s assume, Vlae, multiple aliases. Of which a handful have already been banned, but as you already have acknowledged, “he will be back”. Since you and I both agree with he will be back, then don’t we owe it to all of us, including SFGate’s professional business-like image, that it’s not enough to moderate (scrub!) a troll’s post, but to scrub the “impersonation” and “deceit” along with it? I have to believe you agree with the 2 part nature of moderating such an alias along with the posts.

Now you asked for evidence. Keeping in mind that a context matters as much as a staple of words to identify your troll. So, you asked for evidence. Starting with today, and working backwards – and despite many of chicoflores28’s posts having already been scrubbed as noted, including the latest Germanic – “defamatory” – play on Vogelsong’s name.

@thought_dancer “For Sabean, a youthful prospect like Freddy García has to be irresistible.”

Vlae, Freddy Garcia is now 37 and now history prone to injury. Doesn’t sound like a Giants fans, just for starters, yes? Now, let’s be sure, it shouldn’t matter if our moderator(s) are not Giants fans either, but they must still uphold the spirit of our 4.3 Acceptable Use Policy.

“With the depth that Sabean’s assembled – save us, Freddy Sánchez! – there’s
    no cause for concern.”

Vlae, May I presume you don’t know of Freddy Sanchez or his unfortunate, career-ending diagnosis as a Giant in 2011? Sarcasm is one oft-used arrow in every Troll’s quiver.

    “Where’s Freddy Sanchez, anyway?”

Vlae, ‘beating the dead horse’ – a routine trolling tactic. In fact, this repetitive act defines in greater part what it is to be a “troll”.

“BadGums serves up a dinger to the pitcher!”

Vlae, this is chicoflores28’s most recent post – just posted. Tell me, who is “BadGums”? This is one of ‘Wayne’s’ trademark identifiers – he can’t resist the disparaging play on words … other examples from his past, “flablo,” “Trashikawa” (a ‘slur’ on Travis Ishikawa, the brilliant defensive Giants first baseman, whose bat lagged somewhat behind), “gnats” … Q) what is a gnats, Vlae? A) It’s a “Giants” just not spelled as a Giants fan would ever think to say let alone spell.
Lastly, is “dinger” meant to be a placating or flattering term for Madison Bumgarner having given up a HR in today’s ST game? Hardly.

Given the continuing context and post after post which repeatedly “disparages,” mocks, insults, etc., etc., what is a moderator to do? So, what can you do?

You can first work – or hire some capable soul to – identify without bias the trolling alias.
If this was occurring several years ago when this individual first appeared and who I shall now identify in the real world as “W,” one could have WARNED him that “trolling” violates SFGate’s 4.3 Acceptable Use Policy. And that if he continues, he will be banned.

Okay, that’s not going to work, we know. Too much water under the bridge. You must either moderate the Troll with as much consideration as you censor words / posts. To date, there is no equal treatment policy to all sides – i.e., Giants fans aliases and anti-Giant “Troll” aliases.
IOW’s, if one is going to continue to censor regular Giants posts for thinking to point out / finger “trolling” activity that is a clear, repeat violation of the 4.3 Acceptable Use Policy., then, perhaps, a more equitable (fair!) treatment of all sides – i.e., Troll and Giants fan – would be a HANDS-OFF policy for all.

At least a “Hands Off” policy, Vlae, would allow us to ‘moderate’ the board as best regulars can without ill-informed / ill-timed censoring, nor the appearance of an arbitrary application of the 4.3 Acceptable Use Policy

To continue as per your request for trolling evidence,

The moderator MUST review the original post – if referenced by a “troll” – in order to appreciate the NOT so subtle context of a Troll’s intent to “harass,” demean, disparage, taunt, mock, etc., etc., … all violations of the 4.3 Acceptable Use Policy.

Vlae, reconsider your current moderating approach at SFGate.
    Thank you.

About the time it took me to post my email cc here, I received this follow-up from VK,

    “OK, I banned him.

“FYI, I am NOT the moderator of SFGate comments, nor do the moderators work for me. I’ll help out because the moderators don’t know much about baseball and wouldn’t get something like the Freddy Sanchez comment.”

    Our Moderator(s) don’t know baseball! Wow! That’s reassuring now isn’t it?! 🙂

    • xoot says:

the writer of hotel price lists still shows up when I log onto the splash.

      • Chico says:

Yep. All of the trolls are still there.

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Yes. I emailed VK to mention that little point too … apparently, when VK says he’s “banned,” what he really means is he’s been honored as the latest moderator to oversee the Splash.

So, I learned something(s) today, that I didn’t know before.

          1. VK is NOT a moderator … he ‘only helps out’.
          2. SFGiants / Splash ‘moderators’ don’t know anything about Giants baseball – so they are clueless about references to “BadGums” and all the rest. IOW’s, they are *unqualified* to be moderators … back to Chico’s summation of the fool’s errand.

I sent another feedback request tonight, trying a slightly different subject heading default choice and one of my business email addresses. I’m testing out whether SF Gate support even exists anymore – because twice before now, each inquiry of mine has gone completely unacknowledged.

Anyway, onward and upward, guys! real baseball is almost upon us. Think positive thoughts of those 2014 WS rings in the offing. Knowing the odds stacked against every team, I still like ‘our’ odds. 🙂

  17. xoot says:

The splash trolls are as bad now as I’ve seen them in a long time. One result is a lot of assault from the rest of us on the teams the trolls favor–the AAA’s and the dodgers. VK–an AAA’s fan–is thin-skinned about such stuff. That’s one reason he neglected the splash when he was supervising the blogs, or supervising the people who supervised the blogs. I think that’s also one reason he couldn’t care less about the trolls now.

    Maybe these two can help:

    Annika Toernqvist: Executive Producer atoernqvist@sfgate.com
    Katie Dowd: Sports Producer kdowd@sfgate.com

(Ms. Dowd–no relation to Jon–has published some of the worst posts the splash has ever seen. She seems to know nothing about baseball. So don’t get your hopes up.)

    • sandy32koufax says:

Annika, so you’ve had contact with her? She never returned my emails, although she and her email addy were listed as the person to speak with, during the first month of our enhanced user platform (or whatever the lie was). Poor Jon, he needs someone!

  18. Chico says:

Say it aint so, Leland Yee..

    • xoot says:

      crazy story

      • xoot says:

According to the affidavit supporting the arrest warrants Yee, or “Uncle Lee,” solicited payments from the gangsters to fund his failed mayoral campaign and his, well, as of today failed Sec. of State campaign. He procured contracts and official proclamations and god knows what for the gangsters. Somehow he also got involved in an arms transaction. According to the affidavit. What an arrogant idiot.

        • sandy32koufax says:

Yee seems to have been the same person all of his life and was enabled/protected each time he did anything that should have ruined his career. Hey, the guy did draft, or at least put forth, some good legislation in the CA assembly. That he got off for petty theft or cruising hookers? The old saw “if you lie down with dogs…” comes to mind but I think he’s had fleas all of his life. I met him with Angelides and Novey at one of Garamendi’s cookouts, funny guy that drank too fast, told bad jokes and couldn’t stop talking about himself. Arrogant is an understatement

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

darn it, Chico … remember there’s at least one of us (probably a kazillion lurkers too) that don’t know shit about Leland Yee. A hyperlink to Yee-haaaaaaaaa?!!!!!!! (thanks 🙂 )

Looks like the Giants can afford to add a pitcher and a 2B when necessary:

  21. annapirhana says:

With regard to Yasiel Pig, I might be the lone dissenting Giants fan willing to not badmouth him. If the Dodgers are going to publicly drag his butt through mud, that’s a great deal better than how the 49ers have been dealing with Aldon Smith, whose attempts at “reform” seem to only fit around their needs and schedule. Mattingly seems to be acting on papa style public shaming, which might be the only resort left available, especially since Puig’s actions are affecting the team chemistry (okay, I don’t mind that part at all!)

Puig has a lot to learn, and jumping from Cuba to the City of Illusion with such a large, devoted Latino fan base would only swell an already giant head. It reminds me of rich foreigners who move to the US, buy a fancy car and get into a zillion accidents before they realize that there are driving rules in this country.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

You aren’t the lone dissenting voice – just the voice of reason, while the rest of us are probably talking more tongue-in-cheek even as we wish the very worst, ugh … err … the best, err, well, at least a just measure of mediocrity for Puig in the regular season. 😉

    • sandy32koufax says:

Erp, I didn’t see your post on Puig before writing below, MOB. I’m glad you see things this way. Too many people don’t understand the changes from a place like Cuba to LA, uber poor to uber wealthy…unless it’s a guy from a team they root for.

  22. unca_chuck says:

Frankly I liked the fact that Harbaugh stood behind his player (Aldon Smith) in the aftermath. I can’t guess to know how that came to be (did York resist?) but Smith understood that his coach was willing to step up for him when he was down.

As far as I know, Aldon has been a model guy since his rehab, so chalk one up for coach. Aldon Smith seems like a pretty level-headed kid who just got caught up in the fast lane.

Puig? If he wastes his talent being an idiot, it won’t bother me. I mean he is a Dodger after all. I don’t care either way. Smith seems to have beaten whatever was going on with him. Puig is in da Nile.

I certainly don’t begrudge Donnie 2 times from busting Puig’s chops, but the retractions really fuck things up. Harbaugh did wjhqat he did, and dealt with the ramifications then and there. So far Smith has made him look like the good guy. Mattingly and the front office either need to get behind him, warts and all, or do something to get through to him. The passive agressive approach means they keep running into these same problems.

    • annapirhana says:

Aldon Smith is pretty endearing over twitter, so I don’t hate the guy. However I believe that the 49ers let his questionable behavior go on for far too long before they did anything about it. And while I know he was in rehab for that lawn driving incident for about 3-4 weeks, I have a hard time believing that someone is going to kick alcohol and other behavioral problems within that amount of time. He did return for the bigger games, which made me question the 49ers intentions. What I mean to say is that I wish they cared more for him as an young individual needing help rather than as the money’d asset.

I think Mattingly is trying to save face with the team, though who knows? LA has its own politics, and I get the feeling that he is a blind zookeeper for a bunch of coiffed and pampered rhinoceros. You can pluck all the money down to get the talent, but someone has to be a stronger leader. In this, Harbaugh wins hands down.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

I didn’t delve deeply (not much thought), but Mattingly’s backing off appeared to me – at least on the surface – as bowing to ownership and Puig’s still potentially rising star. IOW’s, Puig’s got Don over a barrel. Don was fully justified to raise the “cry wolf” question among others. As manager, Mattingly was probably damned if he did and damned if he didn’t … because, I can only imagine what Puig’s teammates may be thinking; and even if I overstate the damnable nature of Dodger baseball right now with even the stadium bleacher sections lined in 12k gold arm rests.

        • unca_chuck says:

Yeah,.. Donnie’s stuck in the middle. but he’s got to have the pull to bench/discipline/dog Puig if he screws up/does stupid shit/acts like he’s been acting. I mean, this isn’t even close to that, and the owners are bringing the heat to apologize? Donnie’s having his testicles removed as we speak.

          Not that I mind . . .

          • sandy32koufax says:

Let’s keep the Smith?Puig thing in context, Smith was on a tear for about two years as a pro and has some issues in college-IDK jack abt Puigs’ past in Cuba other than he “sat out” abt a season before “defecting” here. Smith may or may not be past his own demons or whatever but Puig, to be fair, hasn’t drilled a tree, fired weapons or been in the shit like ASmith did and Smith wasn’t a no-show at his position the way Puig has been lately…don’t recall Smith using that faux injury routine either.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

I have had limited time today, but I am bending over backwards to get to the bottom of this ‘moderation’ business not to mention who came up with the slogan, “powered by Viafoura?” … perhaps, some poor hamster locked in his cage with but a wheel and no hope to escape and a crafty sense of irony.

      • Chico says:

‘Our side’? LOL, do the moderators work for a Hearst competitor?

    • Chico says:

I’m not sure I agree with this. Most ADs are really struggling. I hope, after all the court cases, etc, that they can fins middle ground. Either that or Universities will just drop Academic scholarships. I liked the idea, but after reading some about it, could be a problem. Admittedly, I need to read more about it.

      • sandy32koufax says:

Look, every university will make the same claims that have been against unions (see BMW in SC for instance). That doesn’t make the claims true or even “good fiscal sense” for anyone that makes them. It only assures the avarice will continued unchecked. EVERY private uni is very expensive already, UC’s are too. Time to both compensate jox and overhaul a very corrupt system which allows for Jerry Sandusky types as well as Pete Carrolls.

From all I’ve gleaned on this, it isn’t going to place any more of a hardship one most schools than having twenty-eight FB uniforms does. Fair question: since many of these kids DO get injured and have lifelong issues as a result while performing as reps of a given school, shouldn’t the school have a responsibility to help in the ongoing med costs? Hell, kids don’t have time to work a PT job for spending $, no wonder there’s so much graft and entitlement in NCAA sports.

Btw, “scholar-athlete” is a neato, cute marketing tag whose time has come and gone.

Great story Xoot! And holy moly does he look like my buddy Tony Anzgarius.. I mean, a spitting image.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

I thought the Minicozzi story was the best feel good story of the pre-season, and Bochy may yet call on him sometime this year. But the Derek Law story is in its own way equally amazing, especially the comparison of his dad, Joe Law and the “Moonlight” Graham character from Field of Dreams. Except that Joe Law was for real, sharing a somewhat similar short major league career.

The quote referenced twice in the article,

“Never give the hitter too much credit, ever,” Derek said. “They’ll get themselves out seven times out of 10, at least. That’s why I’m a strike thrower. Or try to be, at least.”

is especially apt for a bull pen reliever – who by definition needs to be able to come in and “throw strikes”.

“If you believe the muttering and the scribbling, there will come a time in the near future when Derek will get that call to the major leagues. Joe will catch the first flight. Not to see a stranger, or even his proxy, but to celebrate his son.”

We can sure hope! What a fascinating story. great find, xoot.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Whoever edited the video to Fogerty’s music did a fantastic job. I trust one of you sharper (more beisbol-knowledgeable) doods identify the Boston player (at the 1:02 mark of the video) stuck in between Joe DiMaggio … [who?] … Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays? I’m thinkin’ a young George Raft? (seriously, I never did follow Boston …) 😉

  31. sandy32koufax says:

MOrse SUCKS as an outfielder…expect MUCH worse from mollie and allie 🙂 BTW? Mi amigo Yasiel chupa!

  32. xoot says:

I thought Hudson lacked control in the first 3 but settled in after that. Morse in LF looks just fucking terrible. Bochy should have him out there at dawn tomorrow shagging fungos off the bat of a coach who will not be happy to be there at that hour.

  33. shoelessinbearvalley says:

I think the Giants may be trailing 2-0 (through 5), because of those Gamer Babes of Mass Distraction. Clearly, The Giants need to focus more on the game at hand! Maybe even string together a few hits … mover runners over … score some runs even.

    • sandy32koufax says:

Be real, shoeless…it SHOULD be 2-zip but Morse gave up two runs on horrid plays.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

        No … no, I’m pretty sure it’s the GamerBabes … 🙂

      • xoot says:

Morse’s first fuck up didn’t really hurt. Only a great LF would’ve been able to make the play on Coco at the plate close. Morse’s clanks tonight, however–those piss me off.

        • sandy32koufax says:

The “pop out the mitt” play and that beaut ofa boner on the liner? Ya, I’d be pissed too.

          • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Michael Morse makes Pat Burrell look like a gold glove LF at this point. (at least Pat, while not fast, was a reliable glove.) I still think Morse will improve. Of course if the A’s win tonight, they are at least guaranteed a draw in the head to head battle for spring training ‘supremacy’. 😉

  34. sandy32koufax says:

Fucking Greinke! 3 all in Chavez now, GRRRRR!

Also found a scorecard where I used colored pens to make George Foster look like Dionne Warwick.

  44. Chico says:

I don’t root for the NL West or the Pac-12, Sandy. I don’t root for teams that my teams play (I do have a little love for the Pads, though).

Get it through your skull 🙂 You know me.

    • sandy32koufax says:

You really don’t know why I don’t root for anything San Diego except pretty women??? Ya, I do know you. Time to get past that bullish veneer of CAL only…they didn’t even make the tourney!

      • Chico says:

Rooting for a conference is for weak minded people who need strength in numbers 🙂

Besides NL ball – I always root for NL ball, unless it’s the Dodgers.

  45. Chico says:

        • annapirhana says:

12 Years A Giants Bat Boy and his last name is still Alioto, amirite?

If you want to seriously watch the best film from last year, watch “Blue Is The Warmest Color.”

          • shoelessinbearvalley says:

yeah, I would watch that too. LaSalle’s review of the film is identical to yours: “Best Film” of the year – didn’t receive any Oscar nominations due to late submission to the Academy or some other technicalities?

            • annapirhana says:

Well, I think it’s a bit more than that. The actresses in the movie should have both won nominations, at the very least. It’s pretty typical Hollywood crap. Best movies of the year are winning the top awards at a film festival, but hardly making its way into your movie theater. While everybody else in the world reads our subtitles, Americans are allergic to them. However, you can see “Blue Is the Warmest Color” on Netflix for free.

              • xoot says:

I’ll have to check it out then!

              • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Yes, Mick felt the same way (about the “best actress” nomination, too), but some kind of ‘late filing’ technicality prevented BITWC to received 2014 Academy recognition requirements. I don’t get it, but of course I take full responsibility for the Oscar travesty

                • shoelessinbearvalley says:

p.s. You mean anyone has access to a “free” Netflix rental of the movie? (or is there some caveat, like paying the minimum $7.99 monthly membership fee to stream a somewhat limited number of available movies – i.e., when compared to their regular postal service membership?)

                • annapirhana says:

Oscars always have these “technicalities” when it comes to foreign films that should be winning Best Film. For instance, Kurosawa’s “Ran” fell into that category. “Ran” is a masterpiece, perhaps my favorite Kurosawa movie. Couldn’t get a best film or foreign film nomination because of “technicalities”. “Fanny and Alexander” was a movie that should have won Best Film, but it was only put in the Foreign Film category. Just plain stupid.

As to Netflix, it’s free so long as you have a subscription. Slippery slope.

  52. sandy32koufax says:

Does anyone know if Cam Bedrosian is Ted Bedrosians’ son?

  54. Chico says:

Someone tell Kruk that playing left field at AT&T is NOT challenging. I know it’s Kruk, but C’mon..

    • unca_chuck says:

      It ainl;t right field.

    • xoot says:

But Chico, there’s that car on the fence, and sometimes the fog makes the grass slippery, and anyone who commits an error has to listen the drunk guy who sits down past the bullpen mound, at the rail, and shouts insults in a booming voice. (He has been there forever. I first saw him in about 2005. He shows up drunk and, before sitting down, happily apologizes to everyone around him for how he will act during the game.)

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Is it possible Morse just had a bad first night game experience at AT&T in March? Maybe even a few butterflies playing in front of the home crowd for the first time – with a $6M tattoo on his forehead for all to see? Doesn’t excuse the poor play; so I’m thinking if Morse doesn’t get it together, Sabean will be forced to reconsider bringing back Fred ‘Concrete Glove Honoree’ Lewis?

      • xoot says:

According to Baseball Reference, Morse has played 5 regular season games at China Basin. On the other hand, Baseball Ref. also shows that he started his career as a SS in Seattle, playing 55 games at that position in 2005 and committing 12 errors there, in those 55 games. The great Omar averaged 12 errors per 162 games for his entire career, I believe.

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Despite the fact Morse has had limited ST practice due to the tightness in his calf, it sounds pretty unanimous here that he’s a complete loss … at least if and until he proves himself otherwise. Here’s Bochy on Morse (see the 1:12 mark of video) http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/8878828/v31693403/oaksf-bochy-breaks-down-hudson-bullpens-outing .

          • xoot says:

No, no. I’m hopeful that Morse will be a Pat Burrell type, at worst. His SS days are over. (When he was with the Phillies I saw Burrell misplay a double toward the corner. I was sitting down by the bullpen that evening. When Pat the Bat stood up to throw back to the IF, the infamous drunk waved something at Burrell’s face and yelled: Hey Burro! Want a churro?)

            • shoelessinbearvalley says:

ha! ha! … a good natured drunk at the ballpark … seems to fit right in with the peanuts, cracker jacks, and “kottin kandy here!”

Yeah, the Pat Burrell analogy is approaches what I have imagined too. Although, I’m probably expecting a little bit more speed in the OF outta Morse, assuming he doesn’t forget to keep his glove in two hands.

  55. xoot says:

Michael Morse is taking fly balls in LF right now. He half-joked at the Play Ball Lunch that it can’t get any worse than his debut yesterday

See. I told you Bochy would get him out there shagging fly balls today.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

“it can’t get any worse than his debut yesterday” … my thoughts exactly (at least we hope not ;))

  56. shoelessinbearvalley says:

Free MLB.com Giants / A’s game tonight: 7:15 PM (but, you all probably knew that already) 🙂

Gee, I just noticed the Angels / Dodgers matchup, too, is free. Game time: 5 minutes earlier than Giants / A’s. So many games, too little time, so which to watch …?

  57. annapirhana says:

Would be pretty nice if the Giants went past third base. Reaaaaal nice.

  58. xoot says:

I’ll be surprised if the injury to Lincecum is serious. I’m sure it hurt like hell, but it just didn’t look like a break. Fingers crossed. Meanwhile, Ray Fosse demonstrates what an idiotic a-hole he is as he ineptly attempts to describe what’s happening while injecting his AAA’s bias into the narrative. Fosse is the worst.

    Best to you, Tim.

    • annapirhana says:

Fosse is insufferable. I muted the sound because I just cannot stand to hear him gibber.

I hope Timmy is okay. Don’t want to think bad thoughts.

I sure hope so. That’s one thing about Lincecum – he’s almost never missed a start due to injury. Frankly, Lincecum being hit once more reminds us how much more important it is to get some much-needed ‘practice’ in during ST, while avoiding injury! Winning ball demands staying healthy … and still possessing a deeper bench too (or just in case).

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

edit: that “do” not “due” … but not “dew” … and definitely never doo doo.

          • shoelessinbearvalley says:

??? I definitely lost it for a moment (I thought “due to injury” looked wrong … so, I thought to edit it … oh, never mind … My posts are but an exercise in paying homage to the Almighty Typo.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

“Negative Left Knee Contusion” for Lincecum. IOW’s, could have been a lot worse.

  59. sandy32koufax says:

AWESOME game on CBS! KY vs LoVille

  60. annapirhana says:

Well hell…the piano thing just exacerbated the problems. On the bus with you, Runzler!

  61. shoelessinbearvalley says:

More trolls (a’s fans mostly) than Giants fans at the Splash. I’m thinking the official home base for Giants baseball will be a bust unless the Giants on the field play winning ball – winning is the only way to mute the troll, since the oblivious SFGate moderator(s) won’t / can’t.

    • annapirhana says:

That’s not the official home base for Giants baseball. It’s just a forum site for Schulman’s blog. I like this place better anyway.

I bet no one at the ballgame felt the quake in LA because they were too busy doing the wave.

      • sandy32koufax says:

        NOT TRUE, Mz MEANESS!!!!

I got a ca;; from the Pavilion where my buddy has sat for yrs. He felt it. Just another cheap shot at the fans of the best team in the west…oye!

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Henry is decent. It was Chico who invited me here in the first place. One might suggest that Chico *consider* (only if Chico agrees) inviting the following from SFGate to JD’s Revenge,

“chico_escuela” (unless this is Chico’s alter ego?)
“Marklar49” – who knows his baseball like the best here (I don’t include myself – I’m more of a ‘late-blooming’ “student” of the game 🙂 ).

All the above appear to be thoughtful, intelligent Giants fans and knowledgeable about the game. For Sandy’s sake, maybe JD could somehow manage to ‘tolerate’ 😉 another Dodger blue coconut, but admittedly I’m not sure if that’s such a good idea. I’m only throwing the idea out there, because, well, maybe sandy’s exemplary behavior here warrants some type of reward – you know let him have someone here who shares his misguided love for the color blue or something equally puzzling.

Anyway, if JD is open to recruiting a few others – or at least letting them know what they may not know about John Dowd being “alive and well!” – then I’d be willing to try and help in whatever incapacity deemed unworthy. 🙂

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

oops, I forgot to address the above to MOW … not sure my post makes sense in any other context.

        • annapirhana says:

Yeah!! I think any one of them can be invited. I don’t know who they are as I never go there much except to flag people. Perhaps you’d like to invite them? Just give them the URL.

          • sandy32koufax says:

there’s no more “pm’s” on the gate

            • shoelessinbearvalley says:

              forgive my ignorance, but “pm’s?”

              • sandy32koufax says:

private messages. putting the url to here out on the splash shows it to everyone

                • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Yeah. Absolutely. That’s how Chico contacted me through the old Gate software. I don’t know if private messaging is still permitted under the underwhelming “power” of Viafoura. I’ll check when I get home later today. Whoever does the recruiting, assuming desirable, must be able to have access to private channels of communication … either that or a direct link to the NSA, Kremlin, and Angela Merkel, bypassing Dick Cheney’s underground bunker somewhere outside Casper, Wyoming?

                • sandy32koufax says:

                • sandy32koufax says:

                  Sigint? Whatever

                • sandy32koufax says:

                  SIGNIT, duh

  62. unca_chuck says:

Unreal Dubs game. Lee and Bogut are out and they beat Memphis WITH Gasol and Zach Randolph. Closed the game out with a 14 – 0 run to win it.

  63. sandy32koufax says:

Dildo McGillicuddy is having my comments removed, bitch

    • xoot says:

He’s the worst. What say we stop by the dumbeat. Slusser pays attention to it.

    • xoot says:

The asswipe had my comment about him not being able to dance removed.

      • sandy32koufax says:

He had like ten of mine removed…damn I hate it when anyone gets so butthurt, by nothing, that they remove your comments. very juvi…putz

        • shoelessinbearvalley says:

I just got back from Sonora and reviewed all the threads back at the Splash / Gate. The A’s trolls / mollie / and bfe appear to have the run of the place. Gate monitors are wholly unqualified – incompetent, because they don’t know baseball, the teams, the rivalries, etc., hence, are unprepared to deal specifically with trash-talking trolling tactics. The Gate monitors see only the trees while completely missing / ignoring the pine beetle infested forest of aaa’s, mollie, and bfe trolls.

I don’t see how anything can be gained / won by continued confrontation – but I also don’t see continued confrontation being avoidable, because, the moderator have fucked it all up.

  64. shoelessinbearvalley says:

sandyk, not sure what you meant by SIGNIT? (if it’s a way to contact other(s) without exposing JD’s Revenge to unwanted ‘trash’, that would be a good thing.)

Before any ‘recruiting’ is conducted here, I think others who have been here far longer than me should make the final determination as to who they might be open to making an invitation to join us here. Anyone but me, is what I’m thinking. And, oh, I checked and Viafoura’s software no longer appears to provide any anonymous contact means of other SFGate members. Correct me if I’m mistaken, of course.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Oh. “Sustainable Infrastructures and Geospatial Networks of Information Technology.” Sheesh! what a mouthful of mumbo jumbo.

      • shoelessinbearvalley says:

“there’s no more “pm’s” on the gate” … I know you posted this last night, but for some reason by brain didn’t register it.

Someone here must know how to make an anonymous contact with, say, a member of Splash (hell, I’m not sure we are able to that here at WordPress)? Viafoura was sure an f’ing downgrade from what SFGate had before. Obviously, Viafoura is the exclusive trademark of the Wallmart brand ‘seal of pure crap’.

  65. Chico says:

WTF happened? Who had comments removed?

  66. Chico says:

McGillicuddy, tell your mom I said hello.

  67. Chico says:

    No, Chico_escuela is not me.

    • shoelessinbearvalley says:

Chico, got it … he’s nonetheless one of the more ‘enlightened’ among what otherwise looks like Troll-Gate.

  68. xoot says:

I don’t much care for John Shea, but this piece has some interesting info in it. (Timing is everything. And note that delay of game for replay isn’t a simple issue. There’s TV to think about too. Easy to see which side carries the butter here.)

    • sandy32koufax says:

Did you read his column, linked at the blog, on the subject? Replay for baseball sucks, imo. I never liked the idea of reviewing home runs, so this is an even worse perversion to me. The umps have one job, calling plays and pitches, they’re a part of the game as fallible as Adam and Eve or Big Bill Veeck…

      • xoot says:

Ump fallibility is part of the true game, like a blinding high sky, a sudden gust of wind or a cleat-divot causing a bad hop at SS. Otherwise, why not play all games inside domes with perfect plastic turf and computers making every call?

  69. xoot says:

Kentucky’s sophomore shot blocker Cauley Stein was seen with a walking boot protecting his injured ankle today. uh oh.

    • sandy32koufax says:

Everything I’m hearing and reading has him listed as doubtful. “Kentucky coach John Calipari will be “stunned” if Willie Cauley-Stein plays in the Midwest Regional final.

Cauley-Stein is in a walking boot after injuring his left ankle in the first half against Louisville on Friday night. The sophomore wasn’t in Kentucky’s locker room on Saturday.

“He’s acting like he thinks he can do something,” Calipari said. “He’s saying that he may want to give it a try, but he hasn’t been out of that boot.”

  70. sandy32koufax says:

    More hoops news:

    “Janie McCauley ✔ @JanieMcCAP
Confirmed @ESPNAndyKatz report: #Cal coach Mike Montgomery to meet Mon w/AD Sandy Barbour re future, Barbour says. Contemplating retirement.”

    • Chico says:

He’s a good coach. Folks have gone sour on him after shovegate.

      • sandy32koufax says:

He’s better than good, imo. Barbour is a incompetent nincompoop and if she forces him out too, she should get the boot. Hell, she should anyway.

        • Chico says:

She should have been gone 4 years ago. This is her last year, imo. People think of football – they fail to remember baseball and Rugby, as well as others almost got the ax..

Cal Rugby has won 19 out of the last 21 national championships. Dominance.

          • sandy32koufax says:

You know Cal, Stanford and Le Bruins, along w/Tejas, are always finalists for The Directors’ Cup…the only way teams, AD’s, stay in contention for that award is by winning Nat’l titles.

        • xoot says:

I think Montgomery’s an excellent coach. Berkeley’s just in disarray. Without Montgomery they’ll have a tough time recruiting.

          • Chico says:

Yep. And with the academics (Barsky and his friends),constantly fighting the AD, it’s hard to make it a place where really good athletes want to go. Cal is still in the eye of the storm and not out of it yet. A lot will depend on what happens this season on the foorball field.

          • sandy32koufax says:

Ya, w/o a winner as coach, blue-chip recruits say no thx.

  71. Chico says:

Whatever happens, this KY basketball team has years of young talent on that team.

    • Chico says:

      #22 can play!

    • xoot says:

Problem with KY is the one and done syndrome. Although the Harrison twins didn’t dominate as much as expected, so perhaps they’ll be back. The NBA teams have already figured out where freshman Randle will get drafted.

      • Chico says:

Gotcha.. KY is one hell of a stepping stone into the NBA, always having to reload.

      • xoot says:

The other problem with young players is inconsistency. So far today they’re turrible, just turrible. Too many turnovers, not enough rebounds against a smaller team. Missed FTs. On the other hand, they sometimes come out for the second half with new life.

        Fingers crossed.

        • sandy32koufax says:

It’s the first half of a basketball game with talented teams. Wait for the last 6 minutes…that’s when teams say “It’s Go Time!”

          • xoot says:

Yeah. The end of first half got better for KY. They know they should win this game, despite that MI point guard having the game of his all-star career. Sophomore, that guy.

  72. xoot says:

    Did Barkley just say “dumbinate”?

  73. sandy32koufax says:

That take away was a cool play…then they turn it back over on the traveling call

  74. xoot says:

Well that turned into a good game. GO CATS GO!

  75. sandy32koufax says:

Ky, WI, Conn & FL…Ky showed poise for youngsters winning that game while MI didn’t.

    • xoot says:

Randle always gets tougher as the game goes on. He never gets upset or winded. Really interesting player. The rest of the kids stepped it up and again started to play their best.

The kid Lee, btw, is from Antioch, here in the Bay Area. According to the Ky website he elected Ky and turned down Cal, Louisville and Duke. What a job he did coming off the bench to take Cauley Stein’s place today.

      • sandy32koufax says:

They’re not frosh anymore. This tourney, after the season they played? Ya, maturity has arrived. I didn’t know Lee was a local…reading the sports today I noticed that CIF hoops finals are in and only Monte Vista and St Loseph won a st titles and both are very small catlick schools. Socal killed us again

MI played a good game and Ky overcame but w/o Stein, who knows?

  76. sandy32koufax says:

When Harrison hit that 3 with abt 8 minutes left, you saw the turning point for both teams. No, MI didn’t give up but the sense that Ky would win no matter what, especially after MI got three or four rebounds and finally sank a two, was just how I felt. Good game.

  77. Chico says:

He’ll of a game for Kentucky. Congrats, Xoot!!

  78. sandy32koufax says:

BTW? The Ky women’s hoops blog page is called “Cat Scratches”

  79. xoot says:

Thanks Chico! Sandy, that sounds like Lexington. (Bunch of my cousins went to KY.)

  90. xoot says:

Tonight’s season opener will begin under the warm clear twilight of AZ spring. In fact, the first three games of the season will be night games, which means I will get to watch them all. Meanwhile, I would very much like to thank Selig and mlb for giving the dodgers a nationwide audience last night. (The only other game played yesterday was Houston v. Veracruz.)

The extra stress gave the bums just the encouragement they needed: to try to throw a runner out at third instead of throwing to second to keep the batter-runner from moving into scoring position (Puig) and, on the same play to grab that ill-advised throw assuming that because it came from RF it must off-line (Hanley); to give up a booming HR to a pinch hitter in a one-run game (Wilson); to boot an easy play on a bunt (Wilson) and to misplay an easy ground ball so it clanked off the mitt heel (AGon), thus putting the go ahead and insurance runs on base–both of which, of course, scored.

Ah, what a display. We may not see such baseball from the bums again until October, when they choke and lose the play-in WC game. Go Giants!
