The newest Niner is..

Yep, it’s that time again. Time when we pry our eyes away from baseball and watch the little ticker constantly running beneath the lacquered dome of Mel Kiper as we await the 49ers selection in the NFL draft.

This year the Niners pick 31st, which means we’ll get to see their pick somewhere around midnight local time (actually it’ll be closer to 8 pacific, but it’ll feel like the wee hours of the morning if you sit through the whole thing.) I’ll definitely be switching back and forth with the Giants game to see who went where. Raiderfans will get to kick off their debate early, as they will fire up the Ouija board and seance in Al to pick the guy with the best 40 time at the combine. (Kidding! They’re looking for the defense end who did the most reps this year.)

Don’t wait too long to tune in, however. There’s word that the Niners might be looking to move up in the draft in order to be sure they get the guy they want, most likely either Sheldon Richardson from Mizzou or Kenny Vaccaro from Texas.

I caught a little bit of Radnich this morning in the car, and he was interviewing a Stanford football player (didn’t catch his name) who will be drafted this year.. Asked about any Cal guys he was impressed with — he said ‘Zach Maynard’.. I almost crashed. The QB at my local high school is better than him.. I’m wondering if it was a goof. Had to have been.

Offday. . Hey, now they’re saying that Syria used chemical weapons on it’s own citizens.. Let the drumbeats begin ::facepalm::

I think the Raiders should go with a backup punter in the first round.

Ouija boards? You should know by now that we commune with Al through blunts and tall cans. I think Mackenzie has a few tricks up his sleeve but, all in all, I don’t have high hopes for this draft. The Niners, meanwhile, have so many picks that they just might be able to score a couple of competent special teams players.

    FYI< JDR< but there isn't a game tonight.

Yeah, have a couple 40s of Olde English 800 and a nice splif and you’ll see re-undead Al crawling up your leg with a knife in his mouth. The Raiders may actually be doing things right for a change. Shit-canning half the team and rebuilding. The Niners could give them some much-needed draft picks for that 3rd spot.

Wouldn’t that make Al’s head spin?

I actually do think there will be some sort of deal between the two teams. I’m just relieved that nothing can ever get worse than JaFlabass.

I look forward to the opinions as the draft goes on tonight, fellas. I don’t get into the particulars of football much as my interest in it wanes, but it’s still lots of fun. BTW…happy birthday Unca Chuck’s 49er page!

  7. unca_chuck says:

No kidding. I miostly ignore all the blah blah blah. Nut I do see the Niners trading up to get Vaccaro.

The pisser? They are only having the 1st round tonight. Rounds 2 and 3 are tomorrow and the rest are Saturday.

    Talk about milkig this shit.

With their 13 picks they are going to trade up and trade out to next year.

Who named that poor child Barkevious?

  9. Chico says:

Watching this reminds me of why I keep thinking about canceling cable.

  10. Chico says:

Raiders take a chance on a good story CB.. Dude can play though.

  11. JDR says:

Well, so much for plan A. The guy from Mizzou went to the Jets. Hope they make a move now and trade up for Lotulelei

  12. shaman138 says:

I’m not exactly ecstatic about the Hàyden pick but he just may very well work out. We desperately need more depth at CB. And the Niners do need a free safety in a big way. But the best part about the Reid pick is watching Del Mar froth at the mouth over on chuck’s blog. Clown.

    • JDR says:

Definitely smart move by the Raiders to move down and still get their guy. Three years ago they’d have just taken Hayden with the 3 pick. I think Reggie knows that he needs a few solid starters more than he needs one potential star. There’s not much doubt that next year they will be picking high enough to get another impact player, and he realizes that.

See that blurb on the Raider blog where the Dolphins were ‘gloating’ over their trade/pick.. The Raiders got the better deal in that trade, so the Miami owner looks pretty stupid right now.

  13. Chico says:

Niners: Based on what I’ve read here, on another college football blog I frequent, and another blog, most Niner fans are cool with the pick, while some say we reached a bit, and a couple are pissed.

Raiders: Most of their fans are pissed. Happy with the traded picks, just not THE pick.. They once again went for speed, and not skill – a Raiders tradition according to some of their fans.

  14. Chico says:

aaannnddd, you can’t play the Astros every day.

  15. JDR says:

Ok, Niners on the clock… Bay Area guy? Either Allen or Ertz would be nice. Or do they go with a DL…

  16. mailorderwife says:

This 2nd day of the draft is definitely more exciting and funnier than the first day!

  17. mailorderwife says:

I liked that this guy wore 3D glasses swiped from the theater: Ziggy Ansah. I told my husband that those weren’t real glasses when I watched him on TV. Awesome!

  18. JDR says:

Tank Carredine? Gotta love any D-Lineman who is nicknamed “Tank”

  19. shaman138 says:

Raiders get some much-needed help for the OL and……..Vance MacDonald? Haven’t heard too many good things about him and Vernon Davis is more than adequate at TE for them to blow a 2nd round pick on that position, IMO. But I guess they don’t need to be that picky since they still have about 20 picks left…

    • JDR says:

They do like to run 2 TE sets. The only other guy they got was a scrub from SEA, so I guess this guy is the new Delanie Walker.

  20. shaman138 says:

And Teo goes to the stupid Chargers. Somehow, I’m not surprised. They deserve each other. Fuck ’em both.

    • JDR says:

The AFC West is in a contest with the AL West to produce the most dysfunctional sports team. We’re about overdue for a Marmalard Rivers meltdown, aren’t we?

  21. Chico says:

Cowboys went TE – scratches head.
Seacocks went RB- scratches head even more.. They didn’t need a RB.. They’re stacked as it is.

  22. JDR says:

So..uh… anyone know anything about this new TE?

  23. Chico says:

I like the DE from Auburn.

  24. Chico says:

I forgot the Giants are playing.. Up 1-0.. Missed what happened.

  25. Chico says:

Besides the walk. Timmy looked nasty in the first..

  26. JDR says:

    Giants thread up
