Hitting a stride?

After what we can all agree was a Milwaukee series that brought some of the absolute worst Giants starting pitching in recent memory, things turned around 180 degrees with this weekend’s series against San Diego.

Yes, an injury/suspension depleted Padres squad certainly helped matters, but anytime you get two shutouts and 21 straight scoreless against a major league batting order you have to be thrilled.

Bumgarner was Bumgarner, giving up a couple but as we have some to expect from the lefty he turned in a solid start and left the team in a position to win. Then, Timmy gave us all a huge sign of encouragement with seven shutout innings on Saturday night, followed by the return of Bizarro-Zito who ran his home scoreless streak to 21 innings.

Despite playing out of their minds early, Colorado has only been able to get 1.5 games up. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have built themselves a hole and might just be fighting to stay in the picture while their once-deep starting pitching tries to mend. Greinke found himself on the wrong end of macho idiocy and now Billingsley is taking a trip to the DL. Agent Ned is checking to see of there’s a refund clause on the Harang trade.

If it weren’t suckling pig season right now, Tommy would be furious.

    Bills may need TJ.

Meep meep. Karma Bus. Next stop Southern Cone.

  2. Chico says:

Billingsley to the DL? Sorry to hear that, Sandy..

Katie Dowd just turned the Splash into a political debate. I’m not touching that one with a 10 foot pole.

    • mailorderwife says:

Coming from that fundie lifestyle, I can tell the brand of Christianity into which Zito has stepped. If it helps him, more power to him. However, the whole needing guns thing to protect the loved ones is really sort of exclusive to here and some other third world countries, perhaps, because the power of prayer and thy will be done never seems to be enough.

      • xoot says:

I’m fairly nonplussed to learn that Zito’s new-found ferocity on the mound has its roots in small-minded fundamentalism. Ah well. If only the fundamentalists of all creeds killed only each other.

  3. Chico says:

Lust had an exchange with VK..

Nice blog post! Please keep Katie Dowd away from the Splash.

Chico, since you’re back from your boycott… .it’s one thing to go after me, it’s another to pick on a hard-working young producer who’s doing the lighter stuff that management has requested.

Ok, so I can’t criticize someone who wrote a blog post on the Splash about Giant’s salaries, who then went on about the Yankees being the biggest spenders — when anyone who pays attention to baseball, especially Giants fans know that the Dodgers *our arch rivals* are the biggest spenders?

I don’t recall any A’s fans getting reprimanded for going after John Shea here: http://blog.sfgate.com/athletics/2013/04/17/as-now-12-4-half-the-wins-are-against-the-astros-following-7-5-victory/

I couldn’t make a better case about the double standard, imo.

    • Chico says:

Thanks for the backup Xoot.. I didn’t even know you were back.

      • xoot says:

I jumped on yesterday to take advantage of a straight line Slusser served up. She called me “mean!” I explained my view. She explained hers. We essentially had a short civil conversation. Of course, mosshead weighed in. Slusser then very subtly dissed him (by ignoring him and instead praising EiO as the type of argumentative commenter she likes to see on the blog). mousey got bent over that. I think everyone else involved felt that we had done some good work. 😉

I don’t expect to show up on sfgate much. (wtf are these people on the splash now? Send Belt to Fresno and let Arias bat 2nd?)

    • JDR says:

My guess is that he’s standing up for a junior employee who didn’t really want to be a blogger in the first place but is tasked with posting the click-bait. I can see both points here. Don’t come after VK but craft a reasoned argument and he’ll listen.

      • xoot says:

In a foolish post about a fashion shoot, Katie’s added fluff about Zito’s christian gun toting was not “light” journalism. It was passive-aggressive demagoguery. Give me an interview with Zito about that stuff and I’ll respect it. Give me a sensationalistic summary of GQ designed to rile, and I won’t. I think VK’s defense was craven.

  4. Chico says:

    Come on Vogey..

  5. xoot says:

Vogey looked ok at the end of that inning. It was a long inning, though. There’s this voice in the background that keeps telling me very quietly that both Vogey and Affeldt pitched in the WBC.

  6. Chico says:

We hit a tough pitcher pretty well in the first..

  7. xoot says:

Short shut down inning from Vogey in the second. We got a game. (Why don’t those hockey-style masks have the dangling throat protectors? Posey wouldn’t be in pain right now if he used one of those things.)

  8. JDR says:

Maybe Buster should consider a throat protector. That can’t be pleasant.

  9. Chico says:

My wife said ‘that has to hurt’ — I let her feel my Adam’s apple and said ‘imagine taking a hardball off of that’? Ouch.

  10. xoot says:

    RIP Richie Havens.

  11. Chico says:

I can’t believe the pitcher hit one that far.

  12. Chico says:

    Nice shot Posey!

  13. Chico says:

    Woo Hoo!

  14. JDR says:

So we’re definitely not complaining about Panda or Buster?

I think Belt got a bit of leeway too. Ballgame.

    • mailorderwife says:

YAY! And Belt needed that :>

    • filthychangeup says:

Holy moly what a game! Please let that be the hit that catapults Belt to the success we know he’s capable of. The video of Bochy working with Belt in the cage was a nice flip of the bird to the doomorons and trolls (like slutsmac today) who blame Bochy for Belt’s slow development.

      • Chico says:

Id Slats knew anything, he would have looked at Belt’s AB”s in the minor leagues. . He’s still a little green, believe it or not.

  15. xoot says:

The last few innings of that game were good, huh? Great win. Great win.

    • Chico says:

Those are the ones that feel great! Especially considering that the D Backs play us the toughest, and that they’ll be there with us until the end of the season. They’re a good club.

  16. Chico says:

Count me out of the olive branch.. Not after today. Fuck the A’s.

  17. filthychangeup says:

A big reason why I DESPISE religion:

A couple is under investigation after their 8month boy died after suffering through breathing problems and diarrhea. The parents are on a nine year probation after their first child died in 2009. They’re part of a fundamentalist Christian church that believes in “faith-healing” rather than medicine. Charges haven’t been filed yet and their lawyer insists they’re good parents who distraught over the loss of their second child.

Then why the fuck would you put a fictitious entity over the well being of your CHILD?!? I’m not a parent yet but this type of shit enrages me.

    • mailorderwife says:

Ooooo you’d be surprised. I attended a fundie church for five years or so before I got tired of their constant attempts to have me attend the Bill Gothard brainwashing seminars and the disciplining over my “liberal” mindset. People take things hook, line and sinker, and that’s enough for them. Modern born again Christianity tells them that the church is absolutely correct and has the right answers, and someone else is always wrong or responsible for your problems. Hence, I’m sure this couple felt that they were in the right because it was “God’s Will,” as interpreted by the church. Any sentencing will be perceived as persecution.

There are plenty of reasons to be angry with the movement, especially when you consider the weight of their influence in modern African culture. They are the driving force behind Uganda’s push to enforce the death penalty to anyone who is LGBT. Let’s not forget their insane DOMA and anti-“Gay Agenda” drive. Of course, the Bible also speaks of gluttony as a sin, but I have yet to see anyone picketing the Oreo factory or waging spiritual war against Cheetos. And there is this thing called “blessings”, which have replaced the word for GREED. This is why mega millionaire pastors can get away with so much.

Of course, not all churches are that extreme. That still does not absolve them from demanding that their followers adhere to the law which, ironically, Jesus came to abolish. (Sorry…I believe in God, but I don’t believe in the church).

A great example of getting trolled by a user with many accounts. It happened to me last night. Freaking hilarious.

Three of them have a history of starting a sentence with this ‘>>>’

I thought I asked a good question, but dude decided to not answer it and went on about how I don’t know about bodybuilding. It’s our friend from da creek!

  19. JDR says:

Ouch. Confirmed that it’s TJ surgery for Billingsley. So much for the logjam of starters in LA, smart move by Ned to keep most of them around. Sandy, any idea who takes his place in the rotation? Lily or Capuano?

    • mailorderwife says:

Wasn’t Capuano also injured? I forget.

    • datswhatsup says:

Capuano pulled a calf muscle running in for the Grienke fiasco then popped it in his next start after giving up 5 in the first–obviously wasn’t right but pitched through it.

Lilly has been lit up in minor league games and has been pissed he was forced to rehab.

Bills shows how fragile pitchers can be, the guy was a rising star a few years ago and was the Jonathon Sanchez for a few years (frustrating as hell)

WBB often mentioned several pitchers who were going to have TJ surgery, I forget was Bills one of them?

Like Molly, fishwrap and captgiddyup he’s gone MIA.

    • shaman138 says:

Apparently, they’re calling up Barney Fife to take his place. Ouch.

  20. xoot says:

wtf Crawford? I don’t think gold gloves clank like that.

  21. mailorderwife says:

Must confess that I have it turned onto the Sharks right now.

  22. mailorderwife says:

Wow…what a great hockey game!!! Go Sharks! Let’s get to the playoffs. GO GIANTS!

  23. mailorderwife says:

Voice is so fried. BELT!! Where did everybody go?

  24. Chico says:

Still here, chilling with the wife, watching the game.. Bottom of 10, lets do this.

  25. filthychangeup says:

There’s the Brandon Belt we’ve been waiting for! CRUSHED IT!!!

  26. Chico says:

    Should have held him..

  27. mailorderwife says:

Really, Torres? We’re trying to win, here.

  28. Chico says:

    Belt should have had that.

  29. xoot says:

Well that was a fucked up finish.

  30. Chico says:

Well, brain farts don’t get you wins.

  31. shaman138 says:

How the fuck does Paul Goldshitstain have so much ownage on us? That guy’s starting to really bug me.

  32. xoot says:

Following the game on the mlb gameday site’s like having a mime relay the play by play. Did Crawford’s double almost clear the CF fence?

    • Chico says:

CF was playing him towards the LF side.. Solid line drive about 15 feet to the right of the dead center, three bounces to the wall. He’s smoking the ball right now.

  33. Chico says:

    Another tough loss. Fuck

  34. JDR says:

    Hitting a stride?

…I’ll take that as a “no.”

  35. mailorderwife says:

You think we have it bad? The Dodgers lose on a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th to the Mutts after Donnie stacks the infield with 5 players.

  36. JDR says:

New thread up for tonight’s draft. Begin the insane trade theories.
