The best day of the year

It doesn’t get any better than this. The Giants kick off play in just six hours and, like a kid on Christmas morning, I’m up early and chomping at the bit. The Giants get set to start another year as World_Series_Champions against some piddling club from down south. Dodgers or something? They’re a pretty good team on paper and have one or two fans who aren’t complete assholes.

Let this serve as the opening thread for opening day. Tommy may be back soon, as will a detailed rundown of our NL West competition. But for now, the game speaks for itself. All hail opening day,

And here’s to our A’s going all the way this year! An A’s championship followed by the 49ers beating the Raiders in the Super Bowl. Too cool…Go Niners!

  2. filthychangeup says:

Hahaha, I know the feeling JD. I woke up this morning and my wife just looked at me and said “you’re so excited, arn’t you?” LETS GO GIANTS!!! Year of the Belt!

  3. shaman138 says:

Sabean Schmabean…Ned is ten times the GM that Brian is. Now where’s my Cespedes bobblehead…?

  4. mailorderwife says:

Our boys are down here, making the rancid air much more breathable. I have this thing where I believe all home teams should win their opening day…except today!

Going up to SF on Wednesday. Sooooo excited!

  5. sandy32koufax says:

All of you are right about one thing, TGIB!

Poor shaman is getting the chico treatment, from MOW!

I will laugh my narrow, white ass off if Andre wins MVP and jints fall flat.

WS hardware has it’s privileges though.

    Let’s do this…

  6. Chico says:

I made it to Millbrae ave from Cannery row in a hour in a half! Lets go Giants!

  7. mailorderwife says:

49ers get QB Colt McCoy for a late round draft pick.

  8. JDR says:

Cain was ugly but effective. Mr April and Hair Pluggz both fan, while Crawford runs himself out of scoring position. I’ll take it.

  9. Chico says:

    Cainer! Dude can pitch

  10. Chico says:

    Kershaw goes deep. Fack

  11. JDR says:

    Throw a goddam strike, Casilla.

  12. mailorderwife says:

Wow…Twitter has gone into a panic. This new generation of n00b Giants fan don’t seem to realize that it’s Opening Day. Last time the Dodgers had a fast start, which was last season, their fans were already discussing playoffs…in April. If Giants fans are no better, c’est la vie. It takes a certain type of cynicism, the sort that comes after being a fan since Stoneham era Giants, to not panic. Blargh!

  13. Chico says:

    Well that fucking sucked.

  14. sandy32koufax says:

LOL at you guys n gal!

Kersh throws a gem, racks the ball and gets the win…

And please! Don’t confuse me with those boobs that think this is how the year will go…it’s just another opening day win vs le jints 🙂

  15. JDR says:

I blame myself. Went to drop off the rent check in the 8th. When I got back, Gomer was trotting around third.

Clearly the solution for everything is that I stop paying rent. I’m sure the building manager will understand.

  16. shaman138 says:

Well, tough loss, but the Boys of April are in full swing and the Giants could conceivably be stuck in second place all the way until May. Yikes. Meanwhile, I wonder if Tarp Town will be sold out tonight. I doubt it…

    • Chico says:

I was reading the Flap (a few blogs posts back) and came across an exchange that Xoot had with Flav and another person. . . The A’s made money AND they continue to rely on the MLB govt. tit.. Where is the outrage from the A’s fans? Lemmings.

      • sandy32koufax says:

        It IS Oaktown, Brudduh…

        • xoot says:

Neither Fisher nor Wolff live in Oakland. They’re raking in the profits so long as they don’t have a new stadium. According to the current CBA, when they get one–anywhere, Fremont, Oakland, San Jose–they not only stop receiving revenue sharing money, they have to start paying it out. Why? Because the Bay Area is one of the top markets.

  17. JDR says:

How cute. If you bought aaa’s tickets you get to high five the team and unveil the big division championship mural. The Giants have to make do with HOFers and raising a World Series banner next week.

    • filthychangeup says:

Sfgate moderation might suck but at least they make short work of Wbbanned. Baseball is my favorite sport because the stung of defeat is quickly remedied by the next day’s game. Looking for a big game out of Bumgarner and some bats to wake up. Go Giants!

      • datswhatsup says:

WBB was in hog heaven at his new dodger blog home MSTI. He stated he had triple bypass surgery, I thought I read on the Splash his injury was a pulled labia?

Yesterday was a case of running into a great pitcher and making him look even better by getting deeper into counts, but then again letting the count get to 1-2 ain’t much of a game plan.

        Some other take aways are…
Hair Plugs = head case his fans are fleeing quicker than his follicles
Crawford is not a rocket scientist (pitcher can’t find playe, LH batter up, #4 & #5 hitters due up..sure why not tray and steal?)
Kemp (after 1 game) ain’t Kemp of 2012 (thank god) although his 11 pitch AB vs Cain cost Cain the 7th inning
On ask the dodgers after the game 3 of the first, 10 calls they took were people complaining about traffic leaving dodger stadium…I guess the McCourt’s at least figured out that 15k fans equal easy freeway access.

        Great recovery by Cain
Kontos shows why he can be unhittable and very hittable in the same outing
Scutaro will not, cannot put up anything close to 2012 numbers
Belt looked to be pressing with each AB (dude, 1B is yours…relax)
SF is going to need a LF eventually

        • Chico says:

haha! That’s what some say at our local watering hole.. Of all the quality beers to choose from on tap, when someone we know comes in and asks for a Coors light, they are branded the ‘bruised labia’.. Females are the exception, of course.. Even some of the female waitresses/bartenders bust that joke out once in a while if they know the person..

        • xoot says:

I have to give WBB his due. Recuperating from bypass surgery in a back room in that house next to Oakland Tech high school is not something just anyone could accomplish. Well, maybe if you had good drugs and loud earbuds 24/7. Or no other choice. . . .

  18. mailorderwife says:

Off to San Francisco, but not before we pass Dodger and Anaheim stadiums. This is a sterile environment connected by freeways and strip malls, and I won’t miss it for a second.

I understand the Giants are keeping their Opening Day plans a secret. I hope there is no invite to Train. How about some Tower of Power, Doobie Brothers, Santana or the Dead Kennedys? So much great music out of this area, and the sports teams keep picking crap bands like Huey Lewis or Train. No faux punk Green Day, please.

I’ll upload some photos of the food to my FB. The important things in life, ya know? Cheers, everyone! Beat LA, because this shit town sucks.

  19. Chico says:

    Niners just signed Asomugha..

  20. Chico says:

I dabbled with the Splash, but still the same morons.. I’m on a game blog on facebook called San Francisco Giants fan zone..

  21. sandy32koufax says:

  22. sandy32koufax says:

BTW, Ryu? I’m not impressed at all.

  23. shaman138 says:

Justin Sellers is no Dee Gordon, that’s for sure!

  24. xoot says:

Holy shit that dodger SS Sellers has a powerful arm. He overthrew 1B and home plate. What a find.

  25. sandy32koufax says:

Bum is bumming this Bums fan out.

The chubber from Korea, the slouch at SS, Agon staying gone, Kemp?, hell, ALL of em. Bats anyone?

  26. sandy32koufax says:

Should have brought Kontos in to start the seventh…and had Kersh PH to lead off the order.

  27. datswhatsup says:

I’m here at the Latrine tonight.

Not sure if it shows on TV or not, but it looks like empty seat bobble head night here.

Many waiting around to see if Kemposer’s gonna dump the Gatorade bucket on a Dodger if one reaches 3rd base

  28. filthychangeup says:

Is Bumgarner fun to watch or what? Now that Posey is taken care of I’d like Bum to be priority number one to lock down.
I can’t help but fell bad for Darvish. Then again, losing a perfecto on the last batter is not as bad as throwing a perfecto only to have a botched call nullify it.

  29. xoot says:

MadBum has been great. vs Punto just now, his attempt at a SO pitch was 2 inches outside. His next pitch was exactly the same, but 2 inches closer to the plate. SO called. Unbelievable command tonight.

Arias continues to impress at 1B. He’s turning into an AS utility man.

  30. sandy32koufax says:

    Enjoy jfans

I’m amazed by the LA offense, it’s absence I mean

Ya bum pitched great and you can’t beat that.

    Go Blues!

  31. Chico says:

    Ballgame. Cheers!

  32. xoot says:

Now the offense needs to drive more. Fewer DPs would be good. (If that stiff Sellers can turn em, you know you’re screwing up.)

  33. Chico says:

    And the AAA’s lost? Fantastic!

  34. Chico says:

Anyone read MSTI? The guys there are pissed because Giants fans overwhelmed Dodger fans at the Latrine tonight by chanting “beat LA”

    Baby Blue 2 hours ago
Am I hearing Beat LA chants in our own house?

    Gilbert_Vengeance 2 hours ago
How come I can hear Beat LA chant in fucking Dodger Stadium

  35. datswhatsup says:

    Poor Wayne the Stain
-Sandoval with 2 rings and a WS MVP = fat and also is > than any dodger position player save Kemp
-Gumbarner went to bad gums but The Stain still wishes elbow surgery on him, All aboard the Karma bus, after the stop at Kemp Ave & Hanley Street the next stop corner of Billingsly Blvd & Greinke Ct
-Crawford Club Foot? Well I think Neddy would trade Flav Gordon’s, Playing in Quicksand Hanley and Peter Sellers for a month of Craw
-The Stain can’t watch Giants games because he won’t pay for Comcast, in his defense do you know how many of his Travel “books” he’s have to xerox and then sell outside a BART station to pay for a month of cable? Well let’s just say “a lot”
-My favorite is his dislike of Posey! The Stain can’t come to grips with the fact that since Posey has been in the league there has not been a Dodger player worthy of washing his jock, let alone carrying it.

On the bright side The Stain’s avatar was taken at a happier time for him and his mutt, it was the day Wayno’s peanut butter panties arrived.

    • filthychangeup says:

Well played, Dats, thanks for showing us what humorous snark looks like, and you’re probably not even a “writer” by profession.

    • xoot says:

A decent little bookstore on College Ave., within walking distance of the guy’s home, has a shelf or two featuring local writers. A couple of travel guides are in the stack, along with real books by real local writers. Yet his hack work isn’t there. He can’t even make the neighborhood cut.

    • Chico says:

Peanut butter panties and he couldn’t make the neighborhood cut – Absolutely hilarious!

  36. datswhatsup says:

He should write a travel book about traveling to Pluto…a subject he must know more about than baseball.

  37. Chico says:

If you look at his posts, he’s a borderline psychopath. I’ve never know anyone in my life with that much hate towards an opposing team, or people for that matter. He’s a sick fuck. You would think that having a triple bypass would humble a man, but not that asshole.

    • JDR says:

Best to just leave it all alone at this point, IMO. When you give them this much attention you’re being just as bad. Just let it go.

      • Chico says:

Just trying to generate some discussion but point noted. As for being ‘just as bad’, I promise that I’ll stop hoping that Kershaw falls into a wood chipping machine.

    • datswhatsup says:

The Stain is a walking psychology student’s thesis.

Isn’t living the life he was owed given the fact that in his world he is always the smartest guy in the room.

Employers pass because they need doers not blow hards. So either start your own business or go easy and write about something monkey could do….and be sure to choose an area no one cares about so you’re always “right”

Friends are not to be found…turns out condescending assholes are not in high demand.

What’s a fella to do? Work on social skills? Nope the smartest man in the room changes for no man!

What you do is become a contrarian, better yet a virtual contrarian (much healthier), because its better to be hated and mocked than ignored.

  38. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, that shit’s pretty awful. As much as I don’t like the Dodgers, I ain’t gonna make it out to be wishing death or serious injury on them guys. That’s juvenile shit.

  39. Chico says:

I dunno, that’s a really nice looking replica ring.. I usually roll my eyes at the free stuff at the gate but damn, it’s nice looking. I’d post the picture but it takes up the whole damn screen.

  40. xoot says:

Quiroz should be catching and Lincecum should be fucking pitching.

    • sandy32koufax says:

Good call on Lincecum earlier in this thread…he needs to adjust his pitching to his body’s age.

      DP top of 2nd!

  41. sandy32koufax says:

So…this is a BASEBALL blog, ya?

    Let’s chat during the game.

    Novel idea, I know. 😛

I’m on time-delay (dvr is SO cool) and JUST saw the run score.

    • sandy32koufax says:

The point of the first line of my post was simple: FUCK the idjits. We’re fans, they’re seriously in need of attention.

      In several ways…

  42. sandy32koufax says:

    Wasted opportunity.

With LA bats so cold this far I hope this come back to bite em in the ass.

  43. sandy32koufax says:

    RBI Lincecum.

  44. Chico says:

I don’t know what Kuip is talking about.. Folks still play pepper. Shit, at my high school where two of my buddies are coaches, they keep a roll of chain-link and replace the bent in stuff every year.

    Nice AB Tim.

  45. Chico says:

    Schumaker with a boot.

  46. xoot says:

Mattingly’s a genius. Last night he pulled the IF in so close they could hear their pitcher whimpering to himself. Tonight he backs them up so far they can hear the fans in the OF arguing over when to leave. Also, overall, the dodger D is delightful.

  47. Chico says:

  48. xoot says:

Pablito? Bablito? Bambinisimo? “And the Giants with a four spot here in the third!”

  49. sandy32koufax says:

Ethier doesn’t even make a play on that ball?

    Prima dona…

  50. Chico says:

    VERY good inning Timmy.

    • xoot says:

yeah, he had some rhythm going, looked confident. I just don’t understand why since last April he can’t always step onto the mound with that attitude in the first inning.

  51. sandy32koufax says:

    You guys are funny

  52. Chico says:

    Nice play Scoots!

  53. Chico says:

Posey with a boot.. He better start practicing 1st base more.. That contract has 1st base written all over it long term.

  54. Chico says:

  55. JDR says:

So what’s up with the giant coils of rope the pitchers are all wearing around their necks?

  56. Chico says:

    Fucking Mijares.

  57. Chico says:

    Lopez comes through.

    • JDR says:

I’ll take 1 run in that situation any day, but it’s only the 6th inning, these sort of innings are going to start adding up.

  58. Chico says:

I would have kept Lopez in there to face another lefty, but I won;t question Bochy.

  59. datswhatsup says:

It’s early…waaaay early but I wonder how Kemp’s shoulder is?

On the flip side Crawford seems just fine spraying the ball everywhere.

  60. datswhatsup says:

How does a $230m payroll include Guys like Shumacker, Uribe and Lpeter Sellers?

  61. Chico says:

    Way to go Goudan!

  62. filthychangeup says:

    Henry Schulman @hankschulman

Dodger fans, showing their savvy once again, booing Mijares for hitting Schumaker with a 1-2 curveball, with two on and nobody out. #smh

  63. Chico says:

    Giants take the series!

  64. sandy32koufax says:

    Series jints.

    See ya, jfans…

  65. Chico says:

Dats, Buddy5 had a comment of mine removed.. I think that’s his MO..

    • shaman138 says:

No, giving himself a stinky pinky and then letting his dog lick his fingers is his MO.

    • datswhatsup says:

Buddy is pathetic, I’d break down his fragile nature like I did The Stain’s, but I don’t want another lecture!

Reader’s Digest version, Dude is lonely and needs attention, Internet allows him to leave the conersation before losing the argument.

He can never be wrong because somehow he thinks the being right 100% of the time might make people respect him (he knows he is not likeable so respect is what he tries for) so that’s why he comes in after the fact trying to point out how much smarter he is than everyone else.

He ran into trouble last year when he opted to predict some things rather than Monday Morning QB.

If ever a guy owes his life to the Internet it’s Jive7/Yavlou/Buddy5…without it he’s be hanging in a closet years ago.

Buddy boy needs to know the Internet is filled with idiots like me who laugh at the thought of some fat guy in a wife beater in between sessions of Internet Porn and MacGyver reruns, blathering on about how much smarter he is than Sabean & Harbaugh .

      And Shaman, great post!

      • filthychangeup says:

You crack me up Dats, I think FredosDog was your finest work. Speaking of know-it-alls that know nothing I love that Mosshead gets no respect from his fellow AAA’s fans. That guy EiO runs circles around him.

        • datswhatsup says:

FredosDog was my first venture to a blog and was dedicated solely to responding to The Stain. Living as a college kid in LA as an SF man made dealing with The Author a breeze.

At first he wanted some, Wayno found it’s difficult when you’re dealing with a dbag like me who will find that nerve and dance on it at every turn.

“Pseudo Intellectual” got his goat (obviously not the first time he’d been called that)
“The dodgers are simply irrelevant” also struck a chord as he stopped responding to me after that.

FredosDog days were limited as I would respond to The Stain’s pension for picking on “weaker” posters by reminding him he never responds to me.

Then came the humiliation posts about how humiliating it was to be his dog that no amount of washing under garments in bacon could cure.

          Bye bye Fredosdog

  66. shaman138 says:

Aside from Clayton’s dominant first game, I’d say this series went pretty well. So far, so good.

    • Chico says:

      • sandy32koufax says:

I like some of the responses to the post much better than the post.

You all know how I feel about the way LA is doing things to make the team relevant.

I’d rather see the team rebuild itself the way it did in the past but believe that $$$$ signs are too important to the consortium…

  67. filthychangeup says:

Off days three games into the season are torture. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.

  68. filthychangeup says:

HA! You gotta love Sfgate users giving up Roberto Kelly as the answer to Chrons latest bait line for the pay wall.

    • Chico says:

I feel bad for Hank.. I know it’s part of the business and that he’s got to tow the company line because his salary/health benefits depend on the Chronicle being successful but you gotta wonder if he’s grimacing when he writes ‘click here’..

Question: Why aren’t A’s fans getting hit up for the pay wall? It seems to mr that all of their content is free. For example –

That’s a story on the site behind the pay wall, and that’s the first article I have seen over there that’s been free to read.. Another double standard or am I missing something?

      • datswhatsup says:

Have you SEEN the A’s blog’s comments? Ha

The A’s are like water served at a restaurant, most people don’t mind having it around, but start charging me for it? No thanks I’ll just wait for my beer.

Giants win a big game in September, 100 posts, lose a game 200 posts. The A’s, like a hockey team are good for a small fraction of that.

      • filthychangeup says:

I thought I read that the pay articles would be available free after a certain period, this making it even more asinine to pay for it in the first place. That’s why I stopped my subscription to CarandDriver. By the time I got my issue mid-month almost all the articles were available for free on

  69. datswhatsup says:

It’s good to see Pence looking better at the plate.

Sweet to win two games when most of the batting order has not performed as expected and with Belt out.

Hitting, like water, will always find it’s level which means when the team slumps it usually means the team will get hot and win a few laughers.

TL was frustrating, but I think with him I’d take 7 walks versus 10 hits like Ryu. I prefer every pitcher throw like Bumgarner or Kershaw, but with walks “maybe” they’d get out versus 10 hits means they are seeing that ball and seeing it early

LA will be much better as it’s Crawford and that’s it, eventually they’ll hit and eventually they’ll field, but what’s in the bank is in the bank and I’ll take 2/3.

    • Chico says:

It’s definitely a different Pence this year that we saw last year. When he starts to go opposite field, he’s on. When HanRam gets back their offense looks ferocious but his range at SS isn’t that good. They’re gonna be tough, but we’re up for the challenge.

    • filthychangeup says:

Definitely agree about Pence, he looks like a different batter up there. His bomb was sweet last night, got home just in time to see it and it shut the door on the Bums.

In regards to TL, I too was frustrated. I’m with the mentality that his mechanics were much easier to perform when he was younger and as he’s aged the mechanics have been tweaked. Who could forget all the analysis that went into his motion&thr leverage created when he was dominating in 08&09? On the other hand it’s possible that his stuff was so nasty/deceptive when he was new that he won two Cys as a “thrower” as opposed to being a “pitcher”. He certainly matured into more of a pitcher when he started throwing that slider at the end of 2010. Remember the first year of Zito’s contract, when he alarmed everyone with the funky new delivery in ST? Maybe that was something similar, Zito knew he could no longer pitch using mechanics that favored his younger body.

  70. Chico says:

    RIP Mr. Ebert.

  71. shaman138 says:

Holy shit….this is all bad. I can’t find this story anywhere else…I hate humanity right now.,b=facebook

    • JDR says:

Well, Peta claims the guy is a no-kill shelter fanatic who has it in for government workers/unions. Entirely possible; all the photos are credited to himself and the research points back to his own projects. You could get those same shots and claims from any vet’s office in the country. It could also be that Peta is fast-tracking euthenizations to lower its costs and pad its bottom line, though as a non-profit with powerful enemies in the biomed and commercial farming/livestock sector that would be very stupid to do. I’d have to think if there were any legs to this Pfizer and the meat industry would have PACs hammering Peta left and right.

      • shaman138 says:

Given the egreiously outrageous nature of this story, I’d have to agree that it’s just a crazy fabrication. Huffington Post is usually a pretty credible rag, though, which makes it all the more bizarre. Either way, it’s a very disturbing story.

    • Chico says:

I wish I never clicked on that link.

      • shaman138 says:

Yeah, it’s bad. I just can’t believe it’s a hoax if it was in the Huffington Post.

        • Chico says:

Haven’t looked into it but it looks like JDR did. I’ve seen misleading stuff on HuffPo.. Not that common though – they’re usually pretty good. Where I do see some questionable stuff is on the opinion blogs there. Rare, but it happens.

  72. Chico says:

The Giants are bumping the Rolling Stones on opening day.. Sweet!

  73. Chico says:

Excellent ceremonies for those who didn’t get to see it.. You watch and root for these guys for years, put up with the heartbreak, the down years, etc. Then we’re rewarded like this? Gotta admit, I have misty eyes right now.

    • JDR says:

At Bobby G’s in Berkeley watching the game and getting work done over lunch. Very cool ceremony. Nice defense to start the game as well. What’s up with Beltran dogging it down the line?

  74. sandy32koufax says:

Umpire is a bit inconsistent with the strike zone.

I used to work with the first base line ball dude’s company-Froelich Drywall.

He seems to have gained a ton of weight…

  75. filthychangeup says:

Scutaro Ks on four pitches with the bases-juiced? Fballs.

  76. Chico says:

    Oh yeah!!

  77. unca_chuck says:

Ballgame! 0 (earned) runs given up by the starters so far . . . And the banner is raised!

  78. xoot says:

Had to head home for lunch and to watch the game. Glad I did. Zito has developed some serious grit.

    • Chico says:

A friend of mine just informed me that The Giants have won the last 15 starts by Zeto. Unreal

      • xoot says:

I gave up on Zito, completely. But after the regular season last year, I thought maybe I’d been wrong, or that he’d changed. And then the PS work turned it all around. The Giants wouldn’t have won it all last year without his contribution. I bet I never utter another bad word about him. If I continue to get the chance to applaud him, however, I sure as shit will. Here’s to a 83 mph “heater” with cut, just a bit outside the zone, followed by a perfect 75 mph curve, dropping miraculously into the zone.
