Free agent game- who ya got?

Alright, so let’s just say things come down to the Giants only having enough money for one significant free agent signing (which it appears will be the case.) Leaving out the three huge contracts (Reyes, Pujols, Fielder) who do you sign? Rollins? Beltran? The reanimated corpse of Jim Thome?

Personally, I’m torn. Rollins is a local guy who would fill a hole in the field and be a nice 1-2 punch with Freddy Sanchez in the order. On the other hand, Beltran is the type of hitter who would be perfect put in between Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey.

Or maybe you go for the shocker- strike a deal for Ethier and use the money on infield and bullpen depth.

Reyes gets hurt too much He’s sort of a dream risk pick, but I imagine he might be more of a Freddie Sanchez hurt/injuried player. Don’t get me wrong…I love Freddie, but we also didn’t bet the farm on him. (Well, maybe when everyone was whining when we gave up Tim Alderson). Reyes, on the other hand, would require some beaucoup cheeseburgers.

Prince Fielder — I’d rather sign our pitching staff than pay money for him. He’s a bit too emo.

Pujols, well hell…can we even afford him?

I would like to keep Beltran for a reasonable contract, tbh. We could afford him and still manage to pay our pitching staff. Maybe. Plus, Bochy thrives on chemistry and ambiance, and Beltran seems to have been an asset, especially with the Panda.

Andre Ethier – he’s really cute. I’m all for suffocating the Dodger outfield, but he also spends a lot of time injured. Plus, he likes to swing and miss.

I’m no Einstein on this thing, btw. If money were unlimited, I’d bring Pujols. He’s a solid superstar and seems to be a good guy.

  2. Chico says:

My first realistic choice would be Beltran because of run production. Dude is a solid hitter and would spend most of the time starting with Nate backing him up and coming in the late innings as a defensive replacement, that would be a solid RF.. I like the Rollins idea, maybe a 1 year contract (not sure if his agent would go for it, doubt it).. Beltran would make me very happy, Rollins would also make me very happy but if I had to choose, Beltran. Good topic JDR because it gets us thinking about SS, and as much as I root for Crawford, he’s was not the answer last year (his stick).. Lets hope he improves in that department.

  3. mailorderwife says:

Ugly, sloppy game. I expect better out of two championship teams.

    I love baseball!

  4. xoot says:

Cardinals just may let this slip away. Shame.
On the FA question, I think Pujols has a bunch of HOF level years left in him — 5, minimum, probably more. But the cost is too high for the Giants. (Take a look at the rundown on the Giants off season contract negotiations.) Beltran impressed me. But Boras is his agent. Only if Fielder and Pujols shove Beltran into the background of the bidding will Beltran be within the Giants’ price range. I would go for it. But then I would have the partnership shellling out whatever pay Neukom demanded just to keep him. In other words, who knows how tight the purse strings will be cinched under the new regime.

I like Rollins, but he’s on the down side of his career. Reyes, as MOW points out, would be the answer if he weren’t so injury prone. The sages on the flap are looking at mlbtraderumors’ notes about Grady Sizemore and Coco Crisp.

Nice hit, Pujols. one out in the bottom of the 9th.

    • JDR says:

I have an uneasy feeling Theo Epstein is going to make Beltran his big signing. Maybe he’ll try to stick it to the Cards and go after Pujols, but I could see the Cubs trying to make a splash with a huge deal for Beltran.

      • xoot says:

Good point. If so, Beltran surely will spend half his time in Chicago on the DL. If it wasn’t for bad luck, they wouldn’t have no luck at all.

  5. unca_chuck says:

I’d see the Cubbies going after Fielder. The Giants aren’t going big. I’d be surprised if they get Beltran. Mainly becaiuse the G’s will get outbid. Beltran must be thinking AL by now. Everyone’s saying Coco Crisp. Ehhh. They still may end up trading J Sanchez for hitting help/

  7. Chico says:

Great game going on now folks.

  8. FUCK YA!!!

    Meet me in Saint Louis!

  9. xoot says:

Now that’s what I like! Baseball tomorrow. Make your plays, Cards. Send Nolan Ryan home dissatisfied.

  10. mailorderwife says:

Who wouldn’t love baseball after tonight’s game? My husband even got into it!

I have to say that while I want the Cards to win, I felt horrible for Nolan Ryan and the Texas. Shades of the Giants losing Game 6 to the Anhells came back in my memory, and that WS alone caused me to not watch baseball for three years. I don’t wish that sort of soultearing feeling on anyone, except for the Bushes.

I’m sure most of you have gone through the comments on the Splash regarding the McCourt-Stow incident and happened upon a particularly insidious commentator named Repo_Man saying some pretty horrible things. My response to him was that he was an idiot who is representing the lamest wrestler in WWE history. This morning, I get an email from the gate saying he wants to connect as a friend (??!!) and then he sends me this message:
    Repo_Man wrote:

I believe that the Gobbledy Gooker is the “lamest wrestler in WWE history” thank you very much!

Where do these fucking nut-jobs come from?

    • JDR says:

He tried to add me as a friend too. Probably just some sociopath who validates himself by generating negative responses. He, mollie and sophrojim will all go away if we ignore them.

      • JDR says:

And we all know that the lamest wrestler in WWE history was the “fake” undertaker.

        • Chico says:

He’s the old humphrey hambone, he also went by gobbly gooker, he’s a stupid right wing racist sexist homophobe who likes to talk shit about Stow.

He also went by rick_rude, and a few other wrestlers.

  12. shaman138 says:

Another one from one of our Splash favorites….it’s either Condo John or hanger himself. These guys are freaks:

    presidentpaul wrote:

just what is your problem? you correspond with hanger several times a month, unknowingly, but of course if you knew his handle, then you would change your tune. still, you and he are not dissimilar in nature, he is for lack of a better pharase, calling an ace a ace and spade a spade, same as you. you seem to be intelligent, so why do you fraternize with these igonorant, immature posters?

Anyway, looks like the Cards have this one in the bag and tonight will most likely be quite the anti-climactic game 7. But you never know, Ron Wash probably still has a few tricks up his sleeve and Nolan’s boys may pull it out. We’ll see…

    • mailorderwife says:

The Splash can’t tell you if a poster is mentally ill/deranged, which makes it a bit of a danger spot. The folks who kept reporting us for doing writing posts or the ones who live to put down the Giants are also people who watch your every move, see you as a dot matrix creature, can’t tell real from fantasy and masturbate on BART about 40x a day.

Anywho, I hope the Cards win. Really hope.

It’s odd, though. People down here want the Rangers to win. People back home (up North) are pulling for the Cards. They pull for the ex-cokehead stories, whereas the rest of us have aligned our allegiance because we pretty much hate Texas. Or so it seems.

The Texas flag waving is annoying, as if they were a separate nation. Maybe we should have unleashed the California Bear to run the length of the outfield to celebrate each Giants run back at AT&T. Hamilton would not have been so focused on that weed smell.

  13. Chico says:

Check this out, pretty funny. My favorite is the guy holding a sign that reads:

“How does Craig James have a job and I don’t” Hilarious

  14. mailorderwife says:

Remember that little article about the drop in % of African Americans playing baseball? Take one look at the crowds in both WS team stadiums, then stop asking that question. On the other hand, California represents well :>

    • St Louis…we lived near there when Sandy was but a wee lad…my Mom is from Kansas City, Mo…

Tejas?…PLENTY of brothas in Tejas but ‘color-blind treatment’ and ‘public access’ is dicey in most areas that Tejanos Blancos choose to it so…

    • xoot says:

I believe when the Rangers are playing at home Ron Washington is the only middle aged black man in the stadium rooting for the team. Last year, the diversity of the Giants fans contrasted beautifully with the homogenous all too white fans of the Rangers. Inf act, the small crowd the Giants flew to Texas for games 4 and 5 were diverse. (One of my kids’ teachers was there, with her husband. She showed up on tv because of her black and orange dress. Those two ain’t white. She’s the one who brought the Ring to school so my kid could wear it, as a grad present. She also gave him a Pablo S signed ball.) But I digress. Next year. Anyway, I just don’t get the same all too white vibe from St Louis.

  15. TOFTT and it’s an RBI!

    • mailorderwife says:

I personally liked CJ Wilson’s exciting showdown v. Furcal.

      • It killed me that Rafa left L.A. I really liked him as a Dodger and for what he brings to his game…yes, he’s been injured too much but he is not young…but…he is still a slick fielder and has been semi-clutch the past two games offensively

        • mailorderwife says:

Didn’t realize that Eugenio Velez went 0-49 this past season. He’s no Furcal!

          • You DO realize how many ex-Dodgers are in the series, let alone the playoffs in toto, this year?

            • OH, and Dee Gordon seems to be a fine replacement thus far!

WHO is the Jints SS next year?

              • mailorderwife says:

Dee Gordon is a cutey. And yes…seems like a few ex-Dodgers in the WS. Good for them, so long as it isn’t with the Dodgers.

As for SS, well, it won’t be Ayuouhenio!

                • I hope you guys PAY for Reyes…

When Timmeh, Matty and Wilson come up for their contracts, there won’t be enough cash to keep ’em all…Thank God!

                • mailorderwife says:

                  Hayell no. No Reyes.

Wonder how the Dodgers would have done if they kept Theriot and Dotel (don’t ask, Dotel)

                • My GF just said “Don’t ask Dotl” the same time I read it!…funny shite!

Wouldn’t have mattered with the LA staff as vulnerable as they were most of the season…and that’s too sad for a guy like Kershaw.

I see LOTS of Dodgers ‘going away’ shortly unless McDipstick sells to the right person/group OR unless he spends big and quits robbing the team…

How does a leopard change his spots, though…

                • mailorderwife says:

Isn’t he in talks with Selig? I heard there was talk of selling the team, but McCrook might make things difficult as he is owner of several Dodger entities. In any case, they’re so desperate for fans that they even sent me a season ticket offer.

                • I got one too…they have a package that includes seats for FIVE BUX a pop for an entire season package

The way things are going, I don’t see Buddy having enough direct clout to force McJerk out. Indirectly, he has plenty of ways of making his connection to LA too expensive…downside is the hit the Dodgers take as a result of that…

                • mailorderwife says:

Oooo speaking of which, I read in a Japanese paper (sometime late September) that Selig threatened to remove the Dodgers from MLB. Is this true. Meth is so bad for the brain.

                • Nasty to quote innuendo and to propagate rumors…

                  Tsk and Fie

  16. xoot says:

LaRussa looks senile. He reacts a second later than everyone else in the dugout. Early Alzheimer’s. We’ll hear about it officially within a year.

  17. 11th!…and I thought it was ‘only’ their 10th pennant!

Must have been thinking of the A’s…

  18. HELL YES!

    Freese is MVP

  19. Chico says:

Freese! That was a great series, congrats to the Cardinals.

  20. Chico says:

Busy signal, I’ll try again tomorrow.

    • Send me YOUR number…

      I have call waiting, btw…

      Put your lovely wife down!;-)

      • Chico says:

I just tried again, busy signal. Not sure what’s going on on your end of the line…My wife is at a bachelorette party swigging bubbly while I’m stuck at home on a Friday night drinking Racer 5 with a bowl of some organic holy shit doobage. Hey, if I’m moving to a foreign country, might as well enjoy Cali’s finest while I still can. Cheers.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Shit. I hate the Cards. Always did, always will. From Whitey Herzog to Tony La Russa, they are smug self-satisfied bastards. No Giants fans should forget 1987.

Or Jose fucking Okendo, their 3rd base coach.

They lucked into their last 2 WS wins.

  22. xoot says:

Did Mussburger just say “much ballyhooed”? And what’s with this southern drawl he’s affecting. Mute.

  23. mailorderwife says:

Another great game tonight, yah? I’m pulling for Stanford.

    • me too…Cal got CRUSHED by the Bruins…which is fine…except Ricky may get another season at UCLA…

      HATE HIM!

And ya, xoot…Musburger and his cohort are tools!

      • Chico says:

4 turnovers, our QB couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat but our coach has a man-crush on him so we suffer. Sounds like some Alumni are raising funds to buy-out Tedford they are that disgusted. He’ll probably be around next year when the team moves into it’s new facilities and the re-vamped Memorial stadium… Start Bridgford, sit Maynard! The Stanford game was a classic nail biter and the better team won.

        Now lets go Niners!
